Bikes of Pan Celtic Race 2022

5 July, 2022

A 2,530km race starting and ending in Wales with a lap of Ireland takes in some of the most unpredictable weather regions of the UK. No edition of the Pan Celtic Race has ever been spared bad weather; the biblical rain at the start in Cornwall in 2021 and the storms in Scotland in 2019 have gone down in PCR Clan legend.

Bike: Orbea Orca M20 2021 edition. Shimano Ultegra mechanical, 50/34 plus 11/36 Sram cassette. Stages power meter. Pacenti custom wheel builds with SON28 Dynamo and Hope 4 rear hub. 30mm Pirelli P-Zero tubeless tires. Igaro D2 USB charger. SON Edelux dynamo lights with Exposure Strada and TraceR Reakt secondary lights. Size 57cm and 16kg dry.

Key items of kit: I plan to mostly bivi as this makes it much more of an adventure and break from the usual. I have an Outdoor Research Helium bivi, Sea to Summit, lightweight down sleeping bag plus an inflatable pillow (pillow makes a big difference!) resting on a Therm-a-Rest half mat. I've found that waking warm makes a massive difference so the weight of the sleeping bag is well worth it and the Helium bivi breathes very well, so no condensation. No tri bars this trip, this is primarily a neck saving strategy. On previous races I've over done the tri-bar usage and had neck problems as a result. I barely used them on last year's PCR and this helped. (I start the race aged 62 but turn 63 a few days in.. ;) )
