Bikes of The Unknown Race 2025
11 April, 2025
Jochen Böhringer
Age: 45
Location: Tamm, Germany
Bike: ORBEA ORCA M11ELTD PWR
I’ll be riding the Unknown Race on a 2025 ORBEA ORCA M11ELTD road bike. The bike will hit the ground with 32mm tires. To be aero and comfortable in the flats I have some Syntace C3 aerobars attached to my cockpit.
Key items of kit: I'm riding a mix of bag brands. But what I love in particular is my new cyclite aerobar bag because it perfectly fits my aerobars and provide plenty of space for items that I can even access while riding the bike. I will go for batteries instead of a dynamo hub because I expect the race duration to be easily coverable with one big battery of my Lupine Piko (will also charge my wahoo and mobile phone with it). See you on the "unknown" road :-)

Bike: I'll be riding my Genesis Fugio 30 (2021) steel gravel bike, albeit with slick 42mm tires. Drivetrain consists of a 11-speed GRX-810 mechanical group, with 172.5 mm cranks. I'm running an oval 40 teeth chainring, with a 11-46 cassette. Aluminum handbuilt wheels by SWS. The front wheel has a SON dynamo hub, and I'm riding with SON front and rear lights. Zipp aerobars for comfort.
Key items of kit: Went with both tailfin and apidura for bags. Front bag holds my sleeping kit (mattress, quilt, bivy bag), in case I do not find a hotel -- not sure how easy it'll be to find in Italian mountains. Saddle bag has room for rain/winter jacket, rain pants, spare socks, long sleeve, short sleeve, leg warmers, gloves, ... I have no clue what the weather has in store, so I'm bringing a bit of everything. Tools are underneath the down tube. Top tube has pump and electronics, frame bag has spare tubes, food and gels and whatever does not fit elsewhere.

Bike: I ride my trusty Stevens RPR4racer aluminum road bike. It now has a mixture of Ultegra, 105 and XT Shimano components. A Son28 dynamo, Edelux2 frontlight and a B&M USB-Werk provide light at night and power during the day. The Conti 4-Seasons tires in 25mm on Mavix CXP30 rims are quite puncture-proof and can handle a bit of gravel.
Key items of kit: My equipment consists of a warm down sleeping bag, sleeping mat, down jacket and a rain jacket. I also have a power bank, a few tools and spare parts with me.

Bike: Bike: Canyon Grail 7 AL eTap
I’ll be riding the 2022 Canyon Grail 7 AL eTap, an aluminum gravel bike equipped with SRAM Rival eTap AXS wireless shifting. For that sweet spot between speed and traction, the bike rolls on 35mm Pirelli tires—ideal for a mix of tarmac and chunky gravel. To stay aero and comfortable on the flats, I’ve added Profile Design aerobars to the cockpit. It’s a setup built for long days in the saddle, where efficiency and versatility matter most.
Key items of kit: I’m running a mix of bag brands that all serve a purpose. Up front is the CYCLITE Handle Bar Aero Bag 01, perfectly tucked between the aerobars with easy access to snacks, gloves, or tools while riding. The PRO Discover Frame Bag (5.5L) offers solid storage without getting in the way of bottles, and out back the Topeak BackLoader 15L handles the bulkier gear. On the top tube, the Apidura Racing Long Top Tube Pack keeps essentials like power banks and food close at hand. For navigation and ride data, I’m using a Garmin Edge 1040, and I’ll be relying on battery packs to keep everything charged throughout the ride. It’s a balanced setup—built for efficiency, flexibility, and long days in the saddle.

A mix of Apidura bags mounted in the middle and rear of the bike carries all the essential gear, including electronics, spare parts, hygiene items, a bivy sack, a down jacket, and clothing for all unknown weather conditions. Food is mainly stored in a small foldable backpack and Cyclite pouches mounted on the handlebar.

Bike: I'm using my Scott Addict RC road bike with Ultegra Di2. Running 28mm S-Works Mondo tires and SQlab saddle. Besides that the bike is more or less standard, no aero-bars.
Key items of kit: My bags are a mixture of an Apidura Expedition saddle bag and a Cycelite top tube bag. Not too much space but all the essentials (hopefully) included. I don't carry proper sleeping kit for outdoors. In the rear I have a Garmin Varia light using a to-be-patented mounting solution from my girlfriend comprising a pack of isotonic tablets. In the front a fancy Lupine light should lead me the way together with a Garmin 530 head unit.

Bike: Fara All-Road
Key items of kit: The Fara All-Road with its tire-clearance seems to be perfect for a race where the destination is Unknown. It is super versatile, fast on the roads and keeps on rolling on gravel too. Strade Bianche roads here I come! René Herse Bon Jon Pass in 35mm - fast rolling and comfortable tires. But the main reason is the perfect color match with the Fara frame color! ;) Aerobars for the long-distance comfort, not really for being more aero. Ortlieb seat-pack in small, it's reliable in every weather - waterproof is mandatory 😬 Evoc hydration-bladder in 1.5l size. It keeps me fuelled and I have some more storage options for fast access like suncream, smartphone and money. In addition I carry Keego Fidlock bottles, easy access also with a frame bag. The long top tube bag from EVOC is mandatory to keep food accessible. Speaking of food: wine gums aka Katjes will fuel me hopefully most of the day :D A hooded rain jacket - the water does not come into the neck - and a long rain pants. A power bank should do the work to keep my electronics charged, smartphone will do the navigation job once I reached the checkpoints.
