At the first edition of the 303LUCERNE on Saturday, 4 May at 08:30, 74 cyclists set off on the challenging route, which covers 328km and 7720 metres in altitude and includes S2 category mountain bike trails.

The route includes several pushing and carrying sections which are not rideable and were not only physically but also mentally very demanding. This can also be surmised and understood based on the average speeds of the finishers, which were between 12-17 km/h.

The event is proclaimed as a challenge and individual performances are not honoured, only the courage to take on this adventure. Nevertheless, some riders ride fast and compete to achieve a good time for themselves. A summary of the fastest 10 times has been compiled here.

A neutralised start saw the riders leave the city of Lucerne and head towards Sonnenberg. At the top of the climb and the first 300 metres of elevation gain, the neutralisation was lifted and the participants were now officially on their challenge. Over the Chräigütsch, which many mountain bikers from Lucerne are probably familiar with and for most of them means a day tour, the route went through the Eigenthal to Schwarzenberg. On the first climb of around 600 metres in altitude, #42 Hendrik Venema was able to make up time with his lightweight setup, which is based on a gravel bike, and took the lead, which he would not relinquish until Zofingen (KM172). The field began to stretch out and the participants needed different amounts of time for the first major hike-a-bike section.

After completing KM40 and 1300 metres in altitude, the riders find themselves in Entlebuch and directly after the most challenging trail on the course (Burgrinne Trail). A leading group was formed consisting of: #42 Hendrik Venema, #44 Yannick Rubli, #11 Tobias Löffel, #47 Daniel Indermaur, #34 Christian Waser, #57 Sämi Bissig, #24 Julie von Grünigen, as the first woman, #118 Philipp Vogel & Christoph Wille as the first team. A short refreshment stop for certain riders and then it was on up to the Schüpferberg via a challenging and steep rib, which again included many tough pushing and carrying sections. This was followed by a short traverse to Kampenknubel and a somewhat longer descent with technical trails.

Before the route leads to Langnau, there are two more chicanes. A detour via Altösch; a tarmac climb with a steep descent on very loose gravel. The first three, #42, #44 and #11, still in a different order, made up a lot of time here. They were followed by #47 Daniel Indermaur and #34 Christian Waser, who were about 15 minutes behind and were able to pull away from the field. At this point, the field was led by the #118 pair. At the front of the field were #37 Jonas Flükiger, #50 Daniel Thürig, #57 Sämi Bissig, #40 Christian Reber and #24 Julie von Grünigen.

#24 had a mechanical defect on the front brake, which forced them to stop at a bike shop in Langnau, losing time and places.

From Langnau, the route heads north again, often via the Napf Bike Trail. This is challenging and contains many technical descents as well as steep climbs that were not rideable for the majority. From Huttwil onwards, the course becomes somewhat smoother and the average speed increases. After 6hrs 20min #42 reached Zofingen, which at KM171 marks about half of the course. Closely followed by #44 and #11, Hendrik Venema decides to take a 15 minute break, while #44 Yannik Rubli takes the lead. The positioning of the first 4 drivers did not change until the finish. #44 Yannik Rubli extended his lead to just over 30 minutes at times.

Around Lenzburg and KM267, #11 Tobias Löffel took over second place and overtook #42 Hendrik Venema. At times #11 is able to extend his lead over #42.

At 02:20 #44 reached the Horbentrail (KM298) and thus the last technically difficult part of the course. At the same pace and thanks to the hardtail, Yannik was able to maintain his position and ride in the lead until Lucerne.

It remained a neck and neck race between #11 Tobias Löffel and #42 Hendrik Venema. #42, riding a gravel bike, was able to keep up with the pace of #11, riding a hardtail, but was unable to catch up. In the last 10 kilometres along the Reuss, however, he made up a place.

The position of #34 Christian Waser had not changed since Zofingen KM171 and he crossed the finish line in 4th position, about 1.5 hours behind.

#54 Oliver Walker and #18 Mathias Jäger crossed the finish line together in 5th and 6th place.

The first woman #24 Julie von Grünigen followed only 2h 40min behind, shortly after her the 1st team #118 Philipp Vogel, Christoph Wille and a little later #50 Daniel Thürig.

47 minutes behind the 2nd placed woman Mascha Wahlig together with her #26 Marius Schada in 10th place.

60 of the 74 riders who started made it to the finish within the finishing time. Nevertheless, everyone, regardless of whether they finished or not, was warmly welcomed and served a brunch or meal.
