> *Quien se apura en la Patagonia, pierde el tiempo*

Down here in Chile’s Deep South they say “those who rush in Patagonia, lose time” and it’s been heartening to see so many riders embrace this attitude. Many of the mid-pack riders chose to take a good night’s sleep in Villa Mañihuales and Amengual which are 70km and 130km from the finish, respectively, instead of riding through the night. This allowed them to arrive well-rested during the daytime on Thursday and Friday in weather that they hadn’t seen since the first morning of the race. This glorious sunshine also tempted many of the finishers back to basecamp for a social, some beers and to greet the remaining riders with a cheer. This felt like an excellent way to finish a race for those who are less concerned about their position, they decided this was how they wanted their race to end and was much more preferable over rushing to finish in the rain in the middle of the night.

__Virutex is the new Gore-Tex__

While the weather held out for the first morning, over the succeeding two days riders rarely changed out of their waterproof kit and many relied on some improvised solutions to keep the water out. The tactics of marigold gloves and cling film wrapped around hands and feet were dubbed Virutex or Velo-Tex by many riders. However, the poor weather did eventually give way for the final two days of the race, resulting in riders stripping down to their summer kit and we finally saw arrivals in shorts and short sleeves, some were even a little sunburned. The previous four editions of AA were held in excellent weather and photos from these races show riders smeared with suncream, carrying plenty of water on dusty gravel roads which was a little misleading for applications to this event for those who didn’t know how unpredictable Chile’s Patagonian weather can be. Over Thursday and Friday, we even saw a handful of riders arriving with salt lines from sweat on their kit.

__Ferry Closure__

On the second day of the race riders were informed that the ferry crossing to the third checkpoint was closed due to bad weather and, also, that they would not need to ride the 63km from La Junta to the ferry crossing. This removed a total 145km from the route but there was no adjustment to final cutoff time meaning riders now needed to average 160km per day, instead of 187km. This change in daily distance was a gift to those whose mileage had been affected by the poor weather, however, the news did make it to some riders who had already fallen behind the virtual snail and decided to scratch. Andrés Tagle had already ridden 6km along the route toward the ferry from La Junta and his time has been reduced by 30 minutes to reflect this extra mileage. His adjusted time is now 46H 45M.

__Rolling the Dice__

When leading rider, Rob Britton, scratched, eventual winner Andrés Tagle took the lead and it was never contested, however, the race to complete the podium behind him was heating up. Cristian Auriemma, Canuto Errazuriz and Matt Brokenshire crossed paths in La Junta where they opted for different race tactics: Cristian was hopeful that he could make it to CP2 and then CP3 in time for the last ferry, although knowing it was unlikely he would have enough time for the return ferry. Nonetheless, this would still buy him 20km and he’d be able to take a full night’s sleep, however, it was also quite a risk. If he missed the first ferry crossing he would be stranded in a place with no shelter or option for resupply. Matt and Canuto decided on a more conservative approach and slept for a few hours in the police station in La Junta. This meant that when the announcement of the ferry closure was made and the route was shortened by 150km, Cristian already had a two hour gap over Matt and Canuto which they could never close.

__Women’s Category__

The women’s category was won by Maria Paola Bulla and Raquel Parizi who kept the crowd at the finish on tender hooks waiting to see if they would arrive side-by-side or if one had gapped the other. At the second checkpoint in Lago Verde, Raquel trailed Maria by ninety minutes but was able to catch her over the following 340km. They decided to ride the final 33km from Villa Ortega together. Maria wasted no time in stripping off her jackets to proudly display her Colombia jersey to a round of applause. Raquel can also be seen donning a cap of her home country.

The women’s race had been affected by multiple scratches of leading women throughout the race, largely due to the direct and indirect effects of the cold and wet weather.

__Party__

__El Tercer Tiempo__

Race sponsor and local brewery, D’Olbek, had kegs and taps of ales and lager for the riders and their loved ones at the race party last night. It was held at 4pm, which is a little earlier than most race parties, but did allow a committed handful of riders and staff to head into town for more drinks and a dance after the awards were handed out. As usual, many riders retired to bed for some well earned rest. Across Andes has fostered a great community around the race and many of the fastest Chilean riders had arranged transport home for the day after the race party, instead of leaving after their finish.

__Awards__

Alongside awards for the fastest solo riders and pairs, Mariano and Paulina handed out the following awards for other riders:
- __Best Social Media__ to Sammie Debeau who managed a takeover of Sugio’s Instagram during the race.
- __Most Friendly__ to Manuel Mococain who looked after Isi Solari when they both scratched.
- __Most Stylish__ to Chas Christiansen, but in his absence, his unofficial pair Alvin Escajeda accepted the award and shared his motto of “one only rider can win, the rest of us have to look good”.
- __Carpe Diem__ to Alfredo Irarrázaval who made sure to enjoy his ride, he made the decision to sleep in Mañihuales on Wednesday night instead of riding through to the finish and arrived Thursday morning.
- __Most Inspiring__ to Paul Owens who didn’t make the cutoff for CP2 but continued to ride the route and made it to the finish an hour before cutoff!
- __Lanterne Rouge__ to Helena Coelho who arrived at lunchtime yesterday with enough time to shower and change before the party.
- The last minute award of __Most Badly Behaved__ was handed in good humour to Óscar Pujol and César Mato for their rowdiness at __all__ times.

To date, there are only three riders who have lined up at all editions of Across Andes, all of whom are Chilean: race winner Andrés Tagle, fourth place Canuto Errazuriz and Jorge Huerta who finished late on Thursday night. Andrés and Canuto have raced as a pair in all previous editions, including winning in 2019. This was Jorge’s second finish having completed the 2021 edition in the Araucania. All three riders talked of the comparisons between editions and they shared similar reflections that the terrain was less technical than any other edition with less climbing but much harder given the poor weather. Chapeau to all three!

Congratulations to each and every rider for their efforts out there.

Aquí en el Sur Profundo de Chile dicen que "quien se apura en la Patagonia pierde el tiempo" y ha sido alentador ver a tantos participantes adoptar esta actitud. Muchos de los ciclistas de del pelotón del medio optaron por dormir bien en Villa Mañihuales y Amengual, que están a 70 km y 130 km de la meta, respectivamente, en lugar de pasar toda la noche de largo. Esto les permitió llegar bien descansados durante el día el jueves y el viernes con un clima que no habían visto desde la primera mañana de la carrera. Este glorioso sol también tentó a muchos de los finalistas a volver al campamento base para un encuentro social, algunas cervezas y para saludar a los corredores restantes con un brindis. Esto fue una excelente manera de terminar una carrera para aquellos que están menos preocupados por su posición, decidieron que así era como querían terminar su aventura y mucho más agradable que apurarse y  terminar bajo la lluvia en medio de la noche.

__Virutex es el nuevo Goretex__

Si bien el clima se mantuvo durante la primera mañana, durante los dos días siguientes los ciclistas rara vez cambiaron de su kit impermeable y muchos confiaron en algunas soluciones improvisadas para mantenerse secos. Las tácticas de los guantes de látex y cinta adhesiva envuelta alrededor de las manos y los pies fueron apodadas Virutex o Velo-Tex por muchos ciclistas. Sin embargo, el mal tiempo cedió durante los dos últimos días de la carrera, lo que resultó en que los pilotos se desnudaran a su kit de verano y finalmente vimos llegadas en pantalones cortos y mangas cortas, algunos incluso estaban un poco quemados por el sol. Las cuatro ediciones anteriores de AA se llevaron a cabo con un clima excelente y las fotos de estas carreras muestran a los ciclistas manchados de crema solar, llevando mucha agua en caminos de grava polvorientos, lo que fue un poco engañoso para quienes se anotaron a este evento sin saber lo impredecible que puede ser el clima patagónico de Chile. Durante el jueves y el viernes, incluso vimos a un puñado de corredores que llegaban con líneas de sal del sudor en su kit.

__El cierre del Ferry__

El segundo día de la carrera, se informó a los ciclistas de que el cruce del ferry hasta el tercer puesto de control estaba cerrado debido al mal tiempo y, también, que no tendrían que viajar los 63 km desde La Junta hasta el cruce del ferry. Esto eliminó un total de 145 km de la ruta, pero no hubo ningún ajuste en el tiempo de corte final, lo que significaba que los competidores ahora necesitaban un promedio de 160 km por día, en lugar de 187 km. Este cambio en la distancia diaria fue un regalo para aquellos cuyo kilometraje se había visto afectado por el mal tiempo, sin embargo, la noticia llegó a algunos ciclistas que ya estaban rodando detrás del caracol virtual y decidieron abandonar. Andrés Tagle ya había recorrido 6 km a lo largo de la ruta hacia el ferry desde La Junta y su tiempo se ha redujo en 30 minutos para compensar este kilometraje adicional. __Tirando los dados__

Cuando el corredor de punta, Rob Britton, abandonó, el inmediato perseguidor Andrés Tagle tomó la delantera y nunca soltó la punta, sin embargo, la carrera para completar el podio detrás de él se estaba calentando. Cristian Auriemma, Canuto Errazuriz y Matt Brokenshire se cruzaron en La Junta, donde optaron por diferentes tácticas de carrera: Cristian tenía la esperanza de poder llegar al CP2 y luego al CP3 a tiempo para el último ferry, aunque sabía que era poco probable que tuviera tiempo suficiente para el ferry de regreso. __Categoría de mujeres__

La categoría femenina fue ganada por Maria Paola Bulla y Raquel Parizi, que mantuvieron a la multitud en la meta con los pelos de punta esperando a ver si entrarían juntas a meta o la tregua se rompería y entrarían en sprint. En el segundo puesto de control en Lago Verde, Raquel perseguía a María con noventa minutos de diferencia, pero pudo atraparla durante los siguientes 340 km. Decidieron avanzar juntas los últimos 33 km desde Villa Ortega. Al cruzar la meta María no perdió tiempo quitándose las chaquetas para mostrar con orgullo su camiseta de Colombia a una ronda de aplausos. También se puede ver a Raquel con una gorra de su país de origen.

La carrera femenina se había visto afectada por múltiples abandonos de las mujeres líderes a lo largo de la carrera, en gran parte debido a los efectos directos e indirectos del clima frío y húmedo.

__Fiesta__

__El tercer tiempo__

El patrocinador de la carrera y la cervecería local, D'Olbek, tenía barriles y dispensadores de cervezas para abastecer a los corredores y sus seres queridos en la fiesta de cierre de la carrera de anoche. Empezó a las 4 p.m., que es un poco antes que la mayoría de las fiestas cierre, pero permitió que un puñado de corredores y staff se dirigieran a la ciudad para tomar más bebidas y bailar después de que se entregaran los premios. Como de costumbre, muchos corredores se fueron a la cama para un descanso bien merecido. AcrossAndes ha fomentado que la gran comunidad alrededor de la carrera y muchos de los ciclistas chilenos más rápidos organizarán el transporte a casa para el día después de la fiesta de la carrera, en lugar de irse Justo después de terminar.

__Premios__

Junto con los premios a los corredores y parejas  más rápidos, Mariano y Paulina entregaron los siguientes premios a otros corredores:

- Las mejores redes sociales para Sammie Debeau, quien dio seguimiento del Instagram de Sugio durante la carrera.
- El más Amistoso:  para Manuel Mococain, que cuidó de Isi Solari cuando ambos abandonaron.
- El más “Estiloso” para Chas Christiansen, pero en su ausencia, su pareja no oficial Alvin Escajeda aceptó el premio y compartió su lema de "solo un corredor puede ganar, el resto de nosotros tenemos que vernos bien".
- Carpe Diem para Alfredo Irarrázaval, quien se aseguró de disfrutar de su viaje, tomó la decisión de dormir en Mañihuales el miércoles por la noche en lugar de llegar a la meta y llegó el jueves por la mañana.
- El más inspirador para Paul Owens, que no hizo llegó al corte en CP2, pero continuó por la ruta y llegó a la meta una hora antes del corte!
- Linterna Roja para Helena Coelho, que llegó ayer a la hora del almuerzo con tiempo suficiente para ducharse y cambiarse antes de la fiesta.
- El premio de último minuto de “más mal portados” se entregó con buen humor a Óscar Pujol y César Mato por su alboroto en todo momento.

Hasta la fecha, solo hay tres ciclistas que se han alineado en todas las ediciones de Across Andes, todos los cuales son chilenos: el ganador de la carrera Andrés Tagle, el cuarto lugar Canuto Errazuriz y Jorge Huerta que terminó tarde el jueves por la noche. Andrés y Canuto han corrido en pareja en todas las ediciones anteriores, incluida la victoria en 2019. Este fue el segundo final de Jorge después de haber completado la edición de 2021 en la Araucania. Los tres ciclistas hablaron de las comparaciones entre las ediciones y compartieron reflexiones similares de que el terreno era menos técnico que cualquier otra edición con menos escalada, pero mucho más difícil dado el mal tiempo. ¡Chapeau a los tres!

__Pair's Winners__

The first pair, Óscar Pujol & César Mato, arrived less than thirty minutes behind the women. The Spanish pair have brought nothing but energy to the event; at each CP they strided in, GoPro in hand, to record as many moments as possible. They arrived at the first CP in third position overall but due to having rested well in accommodation each night they slipped down in the rankings. Óscar and César flew in together from Spain but bad luck struck when Oscar’s bag never arrived in Santiago, leaving him without any cycling clothes. He was able to beg, borrow and buy enough items in Coyhaique, including having to splurge on a new Patagonia jacket and women’s waterproof trousers, which at first glance looked remarkably like fly fishing waders. It clearly wasn’t enough as he was spotted riding in a bin bag, a far cry from his career in the pro tour.

__Ganadoras en categoría mujeres__

Maria Paola Bulla y Raquel Parizi llegaron de la mano ayer por la tarde a las 7 p.m. después de tres días y medio de carrera una multitud de personas esperaban expectantes para ver si llegarían juntos o si uno habría una llegada al sprint. En el segundo puesto de control en Lago Verde, Raquel llegó 90 minutos detrás de María, pero pudo alcanzarla durante los siguientes 340 km. Antes de decidir llegar juntas a Coyhaique, se habían estado atacando hasta Villa Ortega a 33 km de la meta. Al llegar a meta María no tardó en quitarse las chaquetas para mostrar con orgullo su jersey de Colombia entre muchos aplausos.

__Ganadores en Duplas__

La primera dupla, Óscar Pujol y César Mato, llegaron a menos de treinta minutos de las mujeres. La pareja española ha derrochado energía en este evento; en cada CP entraron, GoPro en mano, para grabar tantos momentos como fuera posible. Llegaron al primer CP en tercera posición general, pero al haber descansado bien en el alojamiento cada noche, cayeron en la clasificación general. Óscar y César volaron juntos desde España, pero tuvieron la mala suerte de que el bolso de Oscar nunca llegó a Santiago, dejándolo sin ropa de ciclismo. Fue capaz de mendigar, pedir prestado y comprar suficientes artículos en Coyhaique, incluyendo tuvo que sacar la billetera para comprar una chaqueta Patagonia y pantalones impermeables para mujer, que a primera vista se veían notablemente como vadeadores de pesca con mosca. Claramente no fue suficiente, ya que los vimos apañándose con bolsas y guantes de látex, muy lejos del glamour de su pasado como profesional.

The second checkpoint at Lago Verde closed at midday today. At the same time across the South of Chile, every town’s warning alarm sirens are triggered as practice in the event of a disaster such as tsunami, earthquake or volcano, a reminder to riders that they are riding in a place where the weather can be much worse than rain and wind. We are, after all, almost at the end of the world.

Riders reportedly enjoyed the break in the weather yesterday but those who arrived this morning were soaked through. Fortunately, they'll soon be back at La Junta and in good time to make it to Puyuhuapi for the night.

Riders were informed that the ride from La Junta to CP2 would take approximately five hours which meant anyone at accommodation there last night would have needed to have left by 7am to make it in time. Every rider who attempted it succeeded and the CP was able to close 20 minutes early. All remaining riders are now on their return leg down the Carretera Austral back to Coyhaique, they all have 48 hours to complete 370km in order to make it to the finish for the cutoff at 4pm on Friday. They will be riding south into a southerly cold wind which will make progress slow but the have slightly kinder weather and the impetus of a completion to fuel them along.

Following Andrés' win yesterday morning, Cristian Auriemma arrived after 49 hours of racing, almost two hours behind Andrés, to a small group of the Across Andes team and his partner. Cristian has a background in professional continental road racing and has raced across Europe and predominantly in his home country of Italy. He also finished sixth here last year and is a three time veteran of Two Volcano Sprint where he has never finished outside of the top ten. While he was fully equipped for the poor weather, which is a relief as snow fell when he and Andrés were atop the Cuesta Queulat, he did confess that the old stereotype of Southern Italians avoiding riding in bad weather is true: if the weather is bad in Southern Italy, you can often rely on good weather the following day and avoid riding in poor weather.

Matt Brokenshire rounded out the podium at his first ever ultra. After this race, he'll be staying in Coyhaique for a few days and then heading south with his mum for a month of touring with hopefully better weather! Matt is one of the few foreign riders who had a loved one to meet him at the finish. As soon as he arrived, his first port of call was to ring his wife and daughters back in Rwanda to tell them he had finished in one piece.

The top 10 is now complete with Canuto Errazuriz, Felipe Román, Florian Kraschitzer, Hernan Peralta, Adolfo Espinoza, Antonio Di Battista and Juan Carlos Escolar.

# The Women's Race

Leading woman, Ash Wedelich, scratched 160km from the finish due to hypothermia having stopped to assess her situation when she felt nauseous and was struggling with her knee injury. In the time she stopped, the cold crept in, she pressed the SOS button on her tracker and was eventually taken to hospital where she was able to be put back together and is safely back in Coyhaique. It’s unfortunate as the women’s category has been blown apart for various reasons, mostly related to the cold. All the four of the women who were competitive in the women’s category early on have scratched, which now leaves Maria Paola Bulla as the first woman with 45km to the finish.

A name many Europeans will recognise is Juliet Elliott, she scratched as she believed she was falling behind the pace needed, although she later learnt she could have made it to CP2 in good time. Some misleading information from locals and other riders about the length of time it could have taken to finish meant she pulled the plug earlier than she needed to and admitted that she potentially regretted her decision. It’s a tough position to be in, but in these conditions she confesses it’s safer to be returning by bus to Coyhaique than riding.

El segundo puesto de control en Lago Verde cerró hoy al mediodía. Al mismo tiempo, en todo el sur de Chile, hay un simulacro de desastre natural como un tsunami, un terremoto o un volcán y se activan las sirenas de alarma. Cristian es ex pro en equipos de ruta continental y ha corrido por toda Europa principalmente en su país de origen, Italia. También terminó sexto aquí el año pasado y es un “tres veces veterano” de Two Volcano Sprint, donde nunca ha terminado fuera de los diez primeros. Si bien estaba completamente equipado para el mal tiempo, que lo ayudó cuando cayó la nieve en la cima de la Cuesta Queulat, confesó que el viejo estereotipo de los italianos del sur de evitar montar con mal tiempo es cierto: si el clima es malo en el sur de Italia no se sale y puedes confiar que al día siguiente el tiempo mejorará.

Matt Brokenshire completó el podio en su primer ultra. ¡Después de esta carrera, se quedará en Coyhaique durante unos días y luego se dirigirá al sur con su madre durante un mes de gira con suerte con mejor clima! Matt es uno de los pocos corredores extranjeros que tuvo un ser querido para recibirlo en la meta. Tan pronto como llegó, su primer escala fue llamar a su esposa e hijas a Ruanda para decirles que había terminado en una sola pieza.

El top 10 ahora está completo con Canuto Errazuriz, Felipe Román, Florian Kraschitzer, Hernan Peralta, Adolfo Espinoza, Antonio Di Battista y Juan Carlos Escolar.

__La carrera de mujeres__

La líder de las mujeres, Ash Wedelich, abandonó a 160 km de la meta debido a la hipotermia que le vino cuando se detuvo por náuseas y estaba luchando con su lesión de rodilla. En el momento en que se detuvo, el frío se apoderó de ella, presionó el botón SOS de su rastreador y finalmente fue llevada al hospital, donde pudo volver en auto y está de vuelta a salvo en Coyhaique. Es desafortunado, ya que la categoría de mujeres ha sido destrozada por varias razones, en su mayoría relacionadas con el frío. Las cuatro mujeres que fueron en punta en la categoría femenina desde el principio han abandonado, lo que ahora deja a Maria Paola Bulla como la primera mujer con 45 km hasta la meta.

Un nombre que muchos europeos reconocerán es Juliet Elliott, abandonó porque creía que se estaba quedando atrás del ritmo necesario, aunque más tarde se enteró de que podría haber llegado a CP2 a tiempo. Alguna información confusa de los lugareños y otros corredores sobre el tiempo que podría haber tardado en terminar significó que abandonara p antes de lo que necesitaba y admitió que potencialmente se arrepentía de su decisión. Es una posición difícil, pero en estas condiciones confiesa que es más seguro regresar en autobús a Coyhaique que seguir en carrera.

In the early hours of this morning, Andrés Tagle arrived at the basecamp in Coyhaique to a small group of the organisation, some of whom are also his close friends. Andrés has started all four editions of Across Andes, but this was the first edition as a solo rider having ridden with Canuto Errazuriz in a pair for the first three editions. Canuto finished fourth in this year's race. At the first edition of the race, this pair achieved the rare feat of winning the overall.

While Andrés may have arrived without injury, his bike did not! Issues with the bottom bracket and brakes 20km from the finish rendered him to a walk on the climb but was able to freewheel the descent. Fortunately for him the final 20km is predominantly downhill and his lead was never in jeopardy. This was not his first problem with the bike, at 150km he punctured and quickly pumped some more air into his tyres but thanks to the tyre inserts was able to keep riding with a low pressure until CP1 where he topped up the pressure and never had an issue with the tyres again. Andrés had a food strategy that would make most riders’ stomachs turn; he was carrying a total of 70 gels, some of which he emptied into two soft flasks often used by trail runners so that he didn’t have to open the gels and could drink them from the bottles. He did stop for two meals, once for a chicken and rice dinner in Mañihuales and then a sandwich in La Junta.

En las primeras horas de esta mañana, Andrés Tagle llegó al campamento base en Coyhaique con un pequeño grupo de la organización, algunos de los cuales también son sus amigos cercanos. Andrés ha participado en las cuatro ediciones de Across Andes, pero esta fue la primera edición que corre en categoria Solo después de haber corrido con Canuto Errazuriz su dupla durante las tres primeras ediciones. Aunque Andrés puede haber llegado sin lesiones, ¡su bicicleta no tuvo tanta suerte! Problemas con el pedalier y los frenos a 20 km del final lo complicaron en la subida, pero se pudo soltar en el descenso. Afortunadamente para él, los últimos 20 km son predominantemente en bajada y su ventaja nunca estuvo en peligro. Este no fue su primer problema con la bicicleta, en el km 150 pinchó y rápidamente metió un poco más de aire en sus neumáticos, pero gracias a los insertos de los neumáticos pudo seguir pedaleando con una presión baja hasta el CP1, donde le metió mas presión y no volvió a tener problemas con los neumáticos. Andrés tenía una estrategia alimentaria que haría que el estómago de cualquier estómago se resintiera; llevaba un total de 70 geles, algunos de los cuales vaciaba en dos frascos blandos usualmente utilizados por los corredores de trail para que no tuviera que abrir los envases y pudiera beberlos de las botellas. The majority of riders are currently winding through the fjords of north Patagonia and will both see and feel the new landscapes. The early kilometres in the open and windy pasturelands are far behind them and they will be riding on the valley roads along rivers steeped in dense forests, waterfalls and through the Queulat National Park. The numerous bridges are testament to the government’s determination to build a road down here; the rivers are huge and fast as they are fed by high alpine catchments and there’s been plenty of rain and snow recently. There are a handful of rivers in this region which offer world class rafting, not that any of the riders are considering this. I suspect their rides probably feel like a watersport right now.

The women’s category has been shaken and stirred; Ash Wedelich now leads as Isi Solari scratched due to asthma which was worsened by the cold weather. Sami Sauri also scratched due to fatigue and the climate. Ash has made her way up rankings from 38th at CP1 to the top fifteen and first woman at CP2 but her nearest female competitor, Maria Paola Bulla, is only 35km behind her with 350km to go. Maria has also moved up through the rankings over the first two days. However, Ash’s early knee problems have developed and are causing her enough pain to consider scratching.

The solutions to the poor weather have been plentiful and innovative! With many riders sporting the usual marigold gloves, tape around the vents in their shoes and aluminium foil feet wraps, however a few have taken this improvisation to another level; Juan Santibañez taped the cuffs of his trousers closed, inserted plasticine under his feet to keep the cold air out and sprayed a 3M waterproof spray on his skin which he claimed has worked remarkably well.

There are only three men qualified to compare different editions of the race: Jorge Huerta claims this edition is certainly difficult due to the weather. This combination of wind, rain, low temperatures and snow up high is new territory for Across Andes which has traditionally been sunnier and warmer climates much further north.

# The closing of CP1 - Estancia Ñirehuao

For the riders who didn’t make it to the first CP on Sunday night, they awoke in their accommodation around Coyhaique Alto to bikes covered in a few centimeters of snow which made for a chilly start to the day.

All riders who hadn’t yet scratched made it to CP1 before it closed at 6pm, and our lanterne rouge was Paola Martínez who is currently in Villa Mañihuales with 680km to go. This is her third attempt at Across Andes and thanks to the shortened route due to the ferry closure she has a better chance of making this edition her first finish, third time lucky!

The route was shortened by 145km but the cutoff time has not changed so riders now need to average 160km per day instead of 187km. There are approximately fifteen riders currently behind the non-existent snail but they could always make up time with good tactics and discipline.

For those who made it to CP1 and decided to scratch, transfers were arranged back to Coyhaique although it was a smaller number than expected. The night in the bodega was for most riders a poor night’s rest and they were tardy to leave in the morning. A night in good shelter confirmed to many riders that sleeping outside would not be a sensible option during the race considering that most only have emergency bivvies and sleeping bags. Given it’s currently low season in Patagonia, riders will need to be organised in arranging accommodation ahead of arriving and most who stayed at the CP were planning to stop in Puyuhuapi 190km away. For many of the midpack, it may now become a race to accommodation each night because riders pass through La Junta twice on the route it may prove difficult to find a bed. The Chileans are kind and hospitable people and there’s always a solution around the corner when they meet someone in need of help. I rode down the Carretera Austral on my way to the race and found the occasional squirrel shelters near the road but they will be hard to find in the dark.

Paul Owens, a Brit living in Canada, has scratched due to stomach problems which struck like lightning on the evening of the first day. He leaves his brother to continue riding solo and intends to join his wife who has arranged a solo cycle tour in the Los Lagos region further north in Chile. He hopes this will be more of a cycling holiday in good weather!

Francisco Perez has scratched due to issues with his brakes that he was unable to fix at CP1, he also didn’t have enough time to fix the issue in Coyhaique and rejoin the race.

Much of the excitement tomorrow will come from the finish line as the leaders are expected in early morning and from the second checkpoint at Lago Verde (528km) where riders will comfortably be over halfway. At this point they will have the mental reassurance of now knowing their return route to Coyhaique as they’ve just ridden much of it from Villa Mañihuales, however former race leader Rob Britton claims this is a double edged sword as there will be a handful of long drags with changeable winds which the riders may dread.

La mayoría de los corredores está serpenteando a esta hora a través de los fiordos del norte de la Patagonia y podrán ver y sentir los nuevos paisajes. Los primeros kilómetros en pastizales abiertos y ventosos quedaron atrás y viajan por los caminos del valle a lo largo de ríos llenos de densos bosques, cascadas y a través del Parque Nacional Queulat. Los numerosos puentes son testimonio de la determinación del gobierno de construir una carretera aquí en el extremo sur; los ríos son enormes y rápidos, ya que son alimentados por altas vertientes alpinas y ha habido mucha lluvia y nieve recientemente. Algunos ríos en esta región ofrecen rafting de clase mundial, aunque no creo que ninguno de los ciclistas esté considerando probar suerte. Sospecho que el andar de los corredores probablemente se sienta como un deporte acuático en estos momentos.

Paul Owens, un británico que vive en Canadá, ha abandonado debido a problemas estomacales que lo venían atormentándose desde la primera noche. Deja a su hermano para seguir avanzando en solitario y tiene la intención de unirse a su esposa, que ha organizado un recorrido en bicicleta en solitario en la región de Los Lagos, más al norte de Chile. ¡Ojalá que estas sean más unas vacaciones en bicicleta con buen tiempo!

Francisco Pérez ha abandonado debido a problemas con sus frenos que no pudo arreglar en CP1, tampoco tenía tiempo suficiente para ir arreglar el problema a Coyhaique y volver a unirse a la carrera.

Gran parte de la emoción de mañana estará de la línea de meta, ya que se espera que lleguen los líderes a primera hora de la mañana. También en el segundo puesto de control en Lago Verde (528 km), donde los ciclistas estarán cómodamente a mitad de camino. En este punto, tendrán la tranquilidad mental de conocer ahora su ruta de regreso a Coyhaique, ya que acaban de recorrer gran parte de ella desde Villa Mañihuales, sin embargo, el ex líder de la carrera Rob Britton afirma que esta es una arma de doble filo, ya que habrá un unos tramos largos con vientos fuertes que los corredores debieran considerar.

No plan survives first contact with Patagonia. Many riders' plans have evolved in response to the weather, and now even the organiser’s have as well. The ferry to Raúl Marín Balmaceda has been closed due to weather conditions. The closure of the boat to RMB was forewarned at the briefing in extreme weather or river patterns. This is a real shame as riders lose out on riding to the Pacific Ocean and this port town’s culture very much enriches the route. From our perspective, it also means we miss out on the tantalising race for the ferry before its scheduled closure at 19:00, which I am personally gutted about!

Instead, riders will not need to tackle the dog leg route to the Pacific which cuts out 145km and they now continue south on the Carretera Austral (Rute 7) when they reach La Junta after the eastward dog leg to CP2 in Lago Verde. This also means riders’ brevet cards will be missing their third stamp as the new CP3 is the Copec in La Junta and will be verified using the tracking.

Andrés had already started the road to CP3 from La Junta but only by five kilometres. His lead is now 25km over Christian Auriemma.

Note: the tracking has not accounted for riders missing out the out-and-back to Raúl Marín Balmaceda so once riders head south on the Carretera Austral from La Junta, you’ll need to subtract 145km from their total distance. However, the tracking does occasionally show riders’ distance incorrectly as it doesn’t always correctly distinguish who is riding north and who is riding south.

Ningún plan sobrevive al primer contacto con la Patagonia. Los planes de muchos corredores han evolucionado con el clima, y ahora incluso los planes de los organizadores han debido hacerlo. El ferry a Raúl Marín Balmaceda ha sido cerrado debido a las condiciones climáticas. El cierre del barco a RMB fue suspendido por las condiciones climáticas extremas o patrones fluviales. Nota: el seguimiento no ha considerado que los ciclistas pierden la ida y vuelta a Raúl Marín Balmaceda, por lo que una vez que los corredores se dirijan hacia el sur por la Carretera Austral desde La Junta, tendrá que restar 145 km de su distancia total. Sin embargo, el seguimiento a veces muestra la distancia de los corredores de forma incorrecta, ya que no siempre logra distinguir quién va hacia el norte y quién va hacia el sur.

Closed Ferry! / Ferry cerrado!

It’s been 24 hours since the figurative flag dropped and we’ve seen some changes at the front of the race. The two race favourites from abroad, Rob Britton and Seb Breuer, have both scratched. Rob due to the weather and knee problems and Seb a mechanical. Their departure leaves the Chilean Andrés Tagle to lead with only 20km over his closest rivals Christian Auriemma (Italy) and Canuto Errazuriz (Chile), his former pair. Be warned that the tracking has placed Andrés at 585km but he hasn’t reached CP2 yet so he is in fact only at 473km as it hasn’t distinguished whether he is on the outward leg and return leg. Let's hope this doesn't effect the race with riders looking at their competitors' positions.

The scratch list slowly grew during the night but as riders awake from their slumbers in their emergency bivvies on hay bales at the CP, we’ll see whether that list grows. It’s currently dry here at the CP which should make the decision to keep riding easier. Nonetheless, the CP is dangerously comfortable and still within an easy journey away from the start/finish in Coyhaique.

Other scratches include #213 Mauricio Silva due to illness, #134 Sergio Garin and #07 Dmitry Tkachenko due to fatigue. A handful of riders succumbed to the cold last night including #224 Juan Pablo Baron.

Han pasado 24 horas desde que se dio la largada y hemos visto varios cambios en la parte delantera de la carrera. Los dos extranjeros favoritos de la carrera, Rob Britton y Seb Breuer, se retiraron. Sin embargo, el CP es peligrosamente cómodo pero todavía está tranquilamente a una jornada de la salida/final en Coyhaique.

24 hours in / 24 horas en un ratito

As the race clock strikes twelve hours, it’s safe to say that no rider has stayed completely dry. The morning’s mild sunshine soon gave way to rain mid-afternoon and most riders arrived at the CP at Ñirehuao Estancia in the rain. The early arrivals were fortunate enough to leave while it was still dry and didn’t need to consider staying for a little longer to dry out and warm up. There are the typical scenes of the last minute bad weather solutions of marigold gloves on prune-like hands and cling film around feet and helmets. Many riders are even carrying a clear lens for their glasses and have now tucked away the tinted lens for the foreseeable.

The food offering here meets most ultraracers’ needs; there are homemade burgers, chicken soup, hotdogs, spaghetti, pizza and calzones rotos (Chilean sweet fried dough) in the *bodega*. There is also a cabin on the estancia offering a three-course meal of salad, chicken stew and baked apple dessert for those looking for a more comfortable option with time to spare. Both these offerings have been arranged for the race and all involved have gone significantly out of their way to make this possible.

Many of the front runners are carrying nutrition such as energy powder, gels and bars to help tide them through the long stretches between unreliable resupply. Nevertheless, there are a few certain resupplies at the 24 hour COPEC gas stations which also have cash machines and tools for car repairs that riders are able to use. There are only two COPECs en route but riders will pass them five times due to the T-shape nature of the course.

One rider who took advantage of these gas stations is Matt Brokenshire, a British rider who's co-organiser of the Race Around Rwanda. He'll be backing up his ride here with over a month of touring in Patagonia with his mum and one tent between them. Here he is sporting a helmet cover passed to him from a family member before leaving, judging by his smile he seems happy with his decision to trade self-respect for practicality.

As a European racer, one notable difference here for me is the laid back approach of many of the Chilean riders. Regardless of where they are in the rankings, many of them have taken the opportunity to stop, refuel and share conversations with other riders at the checkpoint, although this may be aided by the poor weather outside.

Rob Britton was the first rider to CP1 at 15:00, he’d ticked off a “bumpy” 221km in a little under 7 hours. He’s clearly here to win and has the form to do so. He had little to say and is clearly a man on a mission, although he did divulge he was aiming to make it to the second checkpoint at Lago Verde in 300 km time, and he's just passed the Cuesta Queulat which was the major obstacle between CP1 and CP2. Rob stopped only to have his card stamped, refill his water and stock up on Powerade. A mere 30 minutes behind him, Andrés Tagle arrived with his brevet card in his mouth and the intention of wasting no time, however, he proceeded to fumble somewhat with his water bladder, lube his chain and pump up his tyres which are noticeably slicker than most. Nonetheless, he had one of the quickest turnaround times at the checkpoint.

Leading pair and third to arrive were Oscar Pujol and César Mato who rattled through the estancia like a tornado of energy! Both riders were so full of enthusiasm and humour, it was easy to forget they had just ridden a hard 220km. They were the first riders to stop and sit down for a meal or two (pictured in header image) although at the cost of an hour and a half and allowed the rain to blow in. The winds in the Valle de Luna and the Pampa had been blowing against the riders for much of the day so the pair were able to organise themselves and profit from drafting each other which gave them a significant advantage over their competitors although they handed that advantage away when stopping for food.

Seb Breuer’s arrival was in fierce contrast to the pair’s and his low mood from illness and mechanical eventually culminated in a scratch. This marks his second scratch from Across Andes in as many years and the disappointment was clear to see.

For the remaining riders at the pointy end of the race, their focus is very much on making the ferry tomorrow with enough time to make the return journey before the last departure of 19:00. None of the leading riders intend on sleeping tonight for fear of gifting a competitor an advantage of half a day.

Isi Solari was the first female and eighteenth overall, with Lucelia Castillejos and Sami Sauri 40 minutes and 50 minutes behind her, respectively, however Lucelia left before the others. Isi stopped for a meal and reported that she was prioritising a good meal before continuing to Villa Mañihuales where she had booked accommodation, along with the majority of the early midpack, whereas Luce wanted to avoid stopping for too long and getting cold so she headed out within ten minutes of arriving. Luce was sporting some medical gloves as her improvised waterproof gloves. Ash Wedelich came in as the fourth woman and reported some knee and shoulder pain which she’s never experienced before, it had not dampened her spirits though.

As riders tuck into their emergency bivvies on the hay bales or head back out into dark night, I’ll be moving to desk duty for stamping the brevet cards of those who arrive during the night. Over the coming twenty four hours, we'll have our eyes set on the riders who are on track to make the ferry and those who come close to the CP closing time of 6pm tomorrow night. It's been a long and wet day for the riders, so we hope for a good night's rest for those who need it. Suerte to all the dots and their humans.

Cuando el reloj de la carrera marca doce horas, podría decir que ningún ciclista se ha mantenido completamente seco. El sol suave de la mañana pronto dio paso a la lluvia a media tarde y la mayoría de los ciclistas llegaron al CP en la Estancia Ñirehuao bajo una intensa lluvia. Los primeros en llegar tuvieron la suerte de irse mientras todavía estaban medianamente secos y no tuvieron que quedarse un poco más para secarse y calentarse. Hay escenas típicas de las soluciones de última hora para estas condiciones climáticas de guantes de látex en manos y bolsas y cinta adhesiva alrededor de los pies y los cascos. Muchos ciclistas incluso llevan un lente transparente clara para sus gafas.

La oferta de comida aquí satisface las necesidades de la mayoría de los ultraracers; hay hamburguesas caseras, sopa de pollo, hotdogs, espaguetis, pizza y calzones rotos (masa frita dulce chilena). También hay una cabaña en la estancia que ofrece una comida de tres platos: ensalada, estofado de pollo y postre de manzana al horno para aquellos que buscan una opción más cómoda y no les preocupa tanto tiempo. Ambas ofertas se han organizado para la carrera y todos los involucrados han hecho todo lo posible para que esto ocurra.

Muchos de los corredores de punta llevan su propia nutrición como polvos, geles y barras para ayudarlos a superar largos tramos sin suministro fiable de comida. Sin embargo, hay algunos reabastecimientos en las estaciones de servicio COPEC de 24 horas que también tienen cajeros automáticos y herramientas para la reparación de automóviles que los ciclistas pueden usar. Solo hay dos COPEC en la ruta, pero los ciclistas pasarán por ellas en total cinco veces debido al trazado en forma de T del recorrido.

Un participante que aprovechó de estas gasolineras es Matt Brokenshire, un corredor británico que es coorganizador de la Race Across Ruanda. Estará de viaje por la Patagonia por más de un mes con su madre y una tienda de campaña. Aquí luce una cubierta de casco que le pasó un familiar antes de irse, a juzgar por su sonrisa, parece feliz con su decisión de privilegiar lo práctico antes de lo estético.

Como corredor europeo, es llamativo para mi el enfoque relajado de muchos de los pilotos chilenos. Independientemente de dónde se encuentren en la clasificación, muchos de ellos han aprovechado la oportunidad para detenerse, reabastecer y compartir conversaciones con otros ciclistas en el puesto de control, aunque esto también podría ser motivado por el mal tiempo.

Rob Britton fue el primer piloto en pasar por CP1 a las 15:00, había logrado completar un “pequeño tramo” de 221 km en poco menos de 7 horas. Está claro que está aquí para ganar y tiene posibilidades de hacerlo. Tenía poco que decir y es claramente un tipo que está concentrado en la carrera, aunque reveló que su objetivo era llegar al segundo puesto de control en Lago Verde  kilometro 300, y acaba de pasar la Cuesta Queulat, que era el principal obstáculo entre CP1 y CP2. Rob se detuvo solo para sellar su tarjeta, rellenar sus botellas con agua y abastecerse de Powerade. A solo 30 minutos detrás de él, Andrés Tagle llegó con su tarjeta de timbraje en la boca y la intención de no perder tiempo, sin embargo, rellenó su bolsa de agua, lubricó su cadena e infló sus neumáticos, que son notablemente más lisos que la mayoría. Con todo, tuvo uno de los tiempos de detención más rápidos en el puesto de control.

La primera pareja y terceros en llegar fueron Oscar Pujol y César Mato, que atravesaron la estancia como un tornado de energía. Ambos ciclistas estaban tan llenos de entusiasmo y humor que era fácil olvidar que acababan de hacer un recorrido durísimo de 220 km. Fueron los primeros en parar y sentarse a comer una comida o dos (en la foto en la imagen del encabezado), aunque esto a costa de perder una hora y media permitiendo que la lluvia se intensificara. Los vientos en el Valle de Luna y la Pampa habían estado soplando en contra los pilotos durante gran parte del día, por lo que la dupla pudo organizarse y beneficiarse de darse relevos mutuamente, lo que les dio una ventaja significativa sobre sus competidores, aunque entregaron esa ventaja cuando se detuvieron para comer.

La llegada de Seb Breuer fue totalmente distinta que la de la dupla. Su mal humor por enfermedad y problemas mecánicos finalmente terminaron en un abandono. Esto marca su segundo retiro de Across Andes y la decepción fue obvia.

Para la mayoría de los pilotos lo más relevante de la carrera, será llegar al ferry mañana con tiempo suficiente para hacer el ida y vuelta a CP3 antes de la última salida de las 19:00. Ninguno de los pilotos de avanzada tiene la intención de dormir esta noche por miedo a darle ventaja de medio día al resto.

Isi Solari fue la primera mujer y la decimoctava en general, con Lucy Castillejos y Sami Sauri 40 minutos y 50 minutos detrás de ella, respectivamente, sin embargo, Lucelia se fue antes que las demás. Isi se detuvo para comer e dijo que estaba priorizando una buena comida antes de continuar a Villa Mañihuales, donde había reservado alojamiento, junto con la mayoría del pelotón del medio, mientras que Lucy quería evitar detenerse durante demasiado tiempo y enfriarse, por lo que se fue a los diez minutos de su llegada. Lucy llevaba unos guantes médicos como sus guantes impermeables improvisados. Ash Wedelich entró como la cuarta mujer y comentó de un dolor de rodilla y hombro que nunca había sentido antes, aunque no le había bajado el ánimo.

Mientras que los ciclistas se meten en sus bivvies de emergencia, en las los fardos de de heno o se dirigen de vuelta a la noche oscura, me quedaré en el puesto para sellar las tarjetas de aquellos que llegan durante la noche. Durante las próximas veinticuatro horas, tendremos los ojos puestos en los participantes que están en camino a llegar al ferry y en los que lleguen cerca de la hora de cierre del CP las 6 p.m. mañana por la noche. Ha sido un día largo y húmedo para los ciclistas, así que esperamos una buena noche de descanso para aquellos que lo necesitan. Suerte a todos los “puntos” y a sus “humanos”.

And they’re off! After a 7km neutralised section from the basecamp of Patagonia Bikers in Coyhaique to Balmaceda Airport, the race is on!

Riders are currently in Coyhaique Alto and moving through the windy pampas lands where they will spend the next few hundred kilometres before reaching the first checkpoint at Estancia Nirehauo. The checkpoint sits in the Valle de Luna (Moon Valley), named for its vast valley floor speckled with rock formations akin to the face of the moon. This loop is one of the rare moments of riding in a wide open landscape as much of the route takes riders along deep narrow fjords where they’ll feel and hear the forested hillsides much more closely. The low clouds from this morning have lifted and there’s currently sunshine up here at the first checkpoint, although it’s as windy as ever!

It’s worth emphasising that the ferry across river Palena to Raúl Marín Balmaceda could prove to be race defining; if a front runner is just within reach of making it to the ferry with enough time for the return journey, it’s worth putting in a race winning effort to gain an enormous thirteen and a half hour advantage over a competitor. This is truly a race within a race.

__The Ones to Watch__

There are a handful of veteran riders who lined up and will be aiming for top spot. Winner of the inaugural 2019 edition, __Andreas Tagle__, took the title in the unusual feat of a pair winning the overall with __Rodrigo Canuto Errázuriz__, who is also lining up. These riders are two of three who have lined up at all four Across Andes, __Jorge Huerta__ is the third.

Two riders who have travelled from further afield are __Seb Breuer__ and __Robert Britton__, both of whom have won Badlands which shares similarities with this race. The AA organisers, Mariano and Paulina, completed this race earlier this year. Seb confessed that he picked up a cold before the race and is unsure how this could affect his ride, as he’s not fully over the sickness which could prove problematic if the poor weather forecast does roll in. Rob is clearly in excellent form from his Badlands win in September so is likely to go well here.

The women’s title will be hotly contested with three names I recognise from previous AA endeavours, all of whom are capable of placing in the top 20 overall. __Ash Wedelich__ lines up for a vengeance after scratching in 2021 due to a dog bite. She finished sixth overall in the inaugural edition and commented on how great it has been to see the growth of the race from approximately fifty riders in 2019 to 192 at this year’s start line. __Isidora Solari__ (pictured below) and __Lucelia Castillejos__ finished second and third female, respectively, last year.

It will be interesting to see how the northern hemisphere racers who are coming out of a season’s racing will ride, compared to those who have just emerged from a winter’s training in the southern hemisphere.

For now, I'm comfortably settled on the hay bales of the heavenly CP1 at Estancia Ñirehuao awaiting the first rider and will be here until the CP closes tomorrow evening at 6pm.

Después de 7 kms neutralizados desde el campamento base de Patagonia Bikers en Coyhaique hasta el aeropuerto de Balmaceda, estamos en carrera!

Los participantes se encuentran actualmente en Coyhaique Alto y avanzan a través de la ventosa pampa, donde pasarán los próximos cientos de kilómetros antes de llegar al primer puesto de control en Estancia Nirehauo. El puesto de control se encuentra en el Valle de Luna, llamado así por su vasto fondo de valle salpicado de formaciones rocosas similares a la cara de la luna. Esta parte es una única en que irán pedaleando por un amplio paisaje abierto, mientras que gran parte del resto de la ruta lleva a los ciclistas a lo largo de profundos y estrechos fiordos donde sentirán y escucharán las laderas boscosas mucho más de cerca. Las nubes bajas de esta mañana se han levantado y actualmente hay sol aquí en el primer puesto de control, ¡aunque hace más viento que nunca!

Vale la pena enfatizar que el ferry a través del río Palena a Raúl Marín Balmaceda podría ser definitorio en la carrera; si un corredor de punta logra llegar al ferry con tiempo suficiente para el viaje de regreso, vale la pena hacer un esfuerzo adicional ya que podría obtener una enorme ventaja de trece horas y media sobre otro competidor que no lo logre. Esto es realmente una carrera dentro de una carrera.

Los que hay que tener en cuenta

Hay un puñado de ciclistas veteranos que se inscribieron y apuntarán al primer puesto. El ganador de la edición inaugural de 2019, Andres Tagle, se llevó el título en la inusual hazaña de que una dupla gane la general con su amigo Rodrigo Canuto Errázuriz, que también está en la lista de partida. Estos participantes son dos de los tres que se han apuntado en los cuatro Across Andes, Jorge Huerta es el tercero.

Por ahora, estoy cómodamente instalada en los fardos de heno del celestial CP1 en Estancia Ñirehuao esperando al primer corredor y estaré aquí hasta que el CP cierre mañana por la noche a las 6 p.m.

From Lago Verde, riders retrace their route back down to La Junta and continue westward to the Pacific coast for their second out-and-back leg which takes them to the port of Raúl Marín Balmaceda for the third checkpoint. Here they will need to take a ferry twice across the Palena River at the 663km mark and ride the 9km to the checkpoint in the town. __Herein lies the art of timings__: the ferry takes 10 minutes and is scheduled from 08:30 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 19:00. This leaves a whopping thirteen and a half hours gap where a rider may find themselves waiting on either side of the river. Using the average speed of last year’s winner, which is mostly useless given it’s a completely different region of Chile and he’s not here, the first rider might reach the ferry at 15:00 which would give them a large margin for making it across the Palena and back within the schedule. However, anything can happen in Patagonia and the weather could throw a large spanner in the works of a rider’s anticipated timings so it’s likely we’ll see a race to the ferry for the front runners. Who doesn’t love a ferry crossing mid-race?

By the time the riders’ reach the pacific, they will have experienced a wide variety of Patagonian landscapes: from the pampa and gaucho culture in Coyhaique Alto, the fjords of the Carretera Austral, the forests and greenery at Lago Verde to the traditional port town of Raúl Marín Balmaceda.

After their coastal kilometres, they will need to return to Junta on the same route they came into Raúl Marín Balmaceda on, resisting the opportunity to take a dip in El Sauce hot springs. Race Director, Paulina Pintof, attests that these are easy to get into but hard to leave!

The final leg of the route is the return from La Junta to Coyhaique. There are few obstacles in the way on this 260km stretch and, if the wind is kind to the riders, this road with its mix of tarmac and gravel is likely to be fast and furious. They climb the Cuesta Queulat again, but this time ascending on the gravel with all its many switchbacks and descending the other steep paved side. At this point, the riders might be in a rush.

Desde Lago Verde, los participantes vuelven por la misma ruta de regreso a La Junta y continúan hacia el este hasta la costa del Pacífico para su segunda etapa de ida y vuelta que los lleva al puerto de Raúl Marín Balmaceda para el tercer puesto de control. Aquí tendrán que tomar un ferry dos veces a través del río Palena en el
Km 663 y viajar los 9 km hasta el puesto de control de la ciudad. Aquí radica el arte de los tiempos: el ferry dura 10 minutos y está programado de 08:30 a 13:00 y de 14:00 a 19:00. Esto deja un enorme intervalo de trece horas y media en el que un ciclista puede quedar varado esperando a ambos lados del río. Usando la velocidad promedio del ganador del año pasado, que es en su mayoría inútil dado que es una región completamente diferente de Chile y además él no está aquí, el primer ciclista podría llegar al ferry a las 15:00, lo que les daría un gran margen para cruzar el Palena y volver dentro del tiempo de funcionamiento. Sin embargo, cualquier cosa puede pasar en la Patagonia y el clima podría desbaratar cualquier plan de carrera, por lo que es probable que veamos una carrera al ferry para los corredores de punta. ¿A quién no le gusta tener que cruzar en un ferry a mitad de carrera?

Para cuando los ciclistas lleguen al Pacífico, habrán visto una amplia variedad de paisajes patagónicos: desde la cultura pampa y gaucho en Coyhaique Alto, los fiordos de la Carretera Austral, los bosques y la vegetación del Lago Verde hasta la tradicional ciudad portuaria de Raúl Marín Balmaceda.

El último tramo de la ruta es el regreso de La Junta a Coyhaique. Hay pocos obstáculos en el camino en este tramo de 260 km y, si el viento es amable con los ciclistas, es probable que este camino con su mezcla de asfalto y grava sea rápido y furioso. Suben a la Cuesta Queulat de nuevo, pero esta vez ascendiendo sobre la grava con muchas curvas y descendiendo el otro lado por un empinado camino pavimentado. En este punto, los pilotos podrían ir muy muy rápido.
