ASLEY CARELOCKS WINS ATLAS MOUNTAIN RACE !

__[Justinas Leveika](https://www.instagram.com/justin.and.bikes/)__ was a main cast member in the 2022 edition of AMR. Already winner of the Three Peaks Bike Race, Race around Rwanda, Race around Wales earlier in the year, he was promised to be a favorite. Invisible at the start (tracker problem), he led the race until kilometer 783 where a fall forced him to retire. In a 30-minute video, the friendly Lithuanian living in Norway gently and confidentially reviews the facts of the race, and he reveals in particular :
- that his route plan (and return plane) was calculated on the time of __Sofiane Sehili__ (winner 2020) and that was modified by 6 unplanned hours of race neutralization due to the river ; 
- the impact of mud on the life of the batteries of an SRAM AXS electric derailleur and the need to ride like a singlespeed to save the battery ; 
- his secret technique (!) to wash his pedal cleats stuck in mud without using his precious water ; 
- the circumstances of his fall ; 
- how he then went to the other side of the mirror by accompanying the organization team car until CP3 then on arrival (he realized they were assaulted by messages from mums and girlfriends) ; 
- and above all his joy that a young generation kid like __Marin de Saint-Exupéry__ wins, a boy for whom cycling is life.

__[Justinas Leveika](https://www.instagram.com/justin.and.bikes/)__ a été un acteur principal de l'édition 2022 de l'AMR. Déjà vainqueur en 2022 de la Three Peaks Bike Race, Race around Rwanda, Race around Wales, il s'annonçait être un sérieux client.  Invisible au départ (problème de tracker), il mènera la danse jusqu'au kilomètre 783 où une chute le contraint à l'abandon. Dans une video de 30 minutes, le sympathique lituanien vivant en Norvège revient en douceur et en confidence sur les faits de course, et il dévoile notamment :
- son plan de route (et son avion de retour) calculé sur le chrono de __Sofiane Sehili__ (vainqueur 2020) et sa gestion des 6 heures imprévues de neutralisation ; 
- l'impact de la boue sur la durée des batteries d'un dérailleur électrique SRAM AXS  et la nécessité de rouler comme en singlespeed pour économiser la batterie ; 
- sa technique secrète (!), pour laver ses cales de pédales engluées de boue sans utiliser de sa précieuse eau ; 
- les circonstances de son accident ; 
- comment il est passé ensuite de l'autre coté du miroir en accompagnant en voiture l'équipe de l'organisation (assaillie par les messages de mamans et de copines) jusqu'au CP3 puis à l'arrrivée ; 
- et surtout sa joie qu'un kid de la jeune génération comme __Marin de Saint-Exupéry__ gagne, un garçon pour qui le vélo est la vie. Un témoignage sincère et très chouette à écouter !

39 riders arrived in Agadir for a last tampon and a beer (like __Lee Townend__ during the night), 57 are still in the race and 41 have retired. In the "pairs" category, Kenyans __Kenneth Mungai and Geoffrey Langat__ won in 4D/11H/00MN. In the "solo women" category, victory is at stake right now (__Asley Carelock__ is 50 km from the finish with 50 km ahead of __Jeanne Lepoix__). In the "solo man" category, see TOP10 below. The first Moroccan, __Mohammed El Boughdali__, came in 13th position with a time of 5D/01H45MN.

At 3:45an (Maroc time), after an epic fourth night, __Marin de Saint-Exupéry__ crosses the finish line first in Agadir (KM1171). Always struggling at the front of the race since start, he took the lead between CP2 and CP3 after the scratch of __Justinas Leveika__ (fall) et  __Philippe Vullioud__ (technical problem), and he was able to contain a possible return from Jochen Bõhringer, who passed yesterday evening at CP3 with less than 90 minutes behind French. You can't imagine how grueling this race is.

The suspense remains for the rest of the fifth forecast. Contrary to the indications of the tracking, __Steven Le Hyaric__ would be according to his Instagram stories in the interval between __Rodney Soncco and Christophe Dijkmans__.

MARIN DE SAINT-EXUPERY GAGNE L’ATLAS MOUNTAIN RACE

A 3h45 (heure marocaine), à l’issue d’une quatrième nuit épique, __Marin de Saint-Exupéry__ franchit le premier la ligne d’arrivée à Agadir(KM1171. Toujours à la lutte au devant de la course, il a pris la tête entre le CP2 et le CP3 après l’abandon de __Justinas Leveika__ sur chute et de __Philippe Vullioud__ sur problème technique, et il a su contenir un éventuel retour de __Jochen Bõhringer__ passé hier soir avec moins de 90mn de retard sur le français.  On ne peut pas imaginer combien cette course est éprouvante.

Le suspense demeure pour la suite du quinté. Contrairement aux indications du tracking, __Steven Le Hyaric__ serait d’après ses stories Instagram dans l’intervalle entre __Rodney Soncco__ et __Christophe Dijkmans__.

While the leader is less than 175 km from the ocean, there are still many battles for the podium:

Battle for the win: __Jochen Böhringer__ is only 18km from __Marin de Saint-Exupéry__, he will certainly take a break at CP3, but we can imagine that the German will have a possible freshness bonus on the final because he got more rest last night? A sprint in Agadir may happen !

Battle for 3rd place between __Christophe Dijkmans, Steven Le Hyaric and Rodney Soncco__ who are in an interval of 3-4 km and probably regularly in visual neck and neck as in the first hours of the race;

Battle to enter the top 5 for __Josh Ibbett__ who is less than 30 km from the previous 3 and seems very consistent.

LAST STRETCH TO THE OCEAN

On a race like the AMR where the route is excessively demanding (rocks, sand, impassable surfaces, long hours of hike-a-bike, elevation gain, difficulties for refueling), the difficulties are exacerbated at night. Between riders who all have a very high level (even "interstellar level" according to the "warrior" __Steven Le Hyaric__ himself, who announced last evenight a future night fight), who are experienced with difficult situations and resistance to sleep, the show of strength intensifies in the dark.

The leaders will probably have 4 nights to face during the race. The third took place for them on the old abandoned colonial road. The race organization describes this sector as follows: [*“The section between Tagmout and Issafen is perhaps our favorite. It is an old track that cars can no longer use due to two broken sections of road. (…) The enormity of the effort required to build this road, by hand, in the Moroccan hills is staggering. This is a truly stunning gravel section. The overwhelming majority of runners told us this was one of the hardest sections.»*](https://www.komoot.fr/collection/1039399/-atlas-mountain-race-2022)

In the morning, it was __Marin de Saint-Exupéry__ who took a serious advantage following the retirement of __Justinas Leveika__ last night and the slowdown of __Philippe Vullioud__ who would have had a serious tire problem at Km822 according to Steven (and who must have gone off track this morning, perhaps looking for a village to try to repair?). __Jochen Böhringer__, who rested some hours in hotels for shower and preventing a saddle sore problem,  is in second place, 30 km behind Marin, followed by __Rodney, Christophe and Steven__. __Josh Ibbett__ is in a steady race in which he seems to be gaining momentum, and it is not excluded that he will return to the top5.

Marin attacks a third successive summit at more than 1800m before reaching CP3 in a very remote area with tens of kilometers without a water point. He seems to have the cards in hand to reach the finish in the lead by tomorrow morning, but the race has already given us twists and turns, such as Justinas' accident last night (announced by himself almost live on the networks social).

23 of the riders (17%) have scratched.

Sur une course comme l’AMR où le parcours est excessivement exigeant (roches, sables, surfaces impraticables, longues heures à pied, dénivelé, rare ravitaillement), les difficultés sont exacerbées la nuit. Entre des riders qui ont tous un niveau très élevé (voire « intersidéral » selon le « guerrier » __Steven Le Hyaric__ lui-même qui annoncait dès hier soir une baston nocturne), qui sont aguerris aux situations difficiles et à la résistance au sommeil, le bras de fer s’intensifie dans l’obscurité. 

Les leaders auront probablement 4 nuits à affronter durant la course. La troisième s’est déroulée pour eux sur l’ancienne route coloniale laissée à l’abandon. L’organisation de course décrit ce secteur ainsi : [*« La section entre Tagmout et Issafen est peut-être notre préférée. C'est une ancienne piste que les voitures ne peuvent plus emprunter à cause de deux tronçons de route cassés.(…) L'énormité de l'effort requis pour construire cette route, à la main, dans les collines marocaines est stupéfiante. C'est une section de gravier vraiment magnifique. Au matin, c’est __Marin de Saint-Exupéry__ qui a pris un sérieux avantage suite à l’abandon de __Justinas Leveika__ hier soir et au ralentissement de __Philippe Vullioud__ qui aurait eu fortement au Km822 un problème de pneumatique d’après Steven (et qui a du sortir de la trace ce matin, peut-etre à la recherche d’un village pour essayer de réparer ?). __Jochen Böhringer__, qui s'est arrete plusieurs heures à l hotel pour se doucher et soigner un probleme d entre-jambe, est en seconde place à 30 km derrière Marin, suivi de __Rodney, Christophe et Steven__. __Josh Ibbett__ fait une course régulière dans laquelle il semble monter en puissance, et il n’est pas exclu qu’il revienne dans le top5.

Marin attaque un troisième sommet successif à plus de 1800m avant d’atteindre le CP3 dans une zone très retiré avec des dizaines de kilomètres sans point d’eau.  Il semble avoir les cartes en main pour rejoindre l’arrivée en tête d’ici demain matin, mais la course nous a déjà offert des rebondissements, comme l’accident de Justinas hier soir (annoncé par lui-même quasiment en direct sur les réseaux sociaux). 

23 riders (17%) ont abandonné.

__Justinas Leveika__ was  in the process of achieving an incredible time despite a forced stop (river km 260) then an exit from the route adding 26km to him. The AMR's Instagram account even announced that it was 2 hours ahead of Sofiane's time in 2020 on an almost similar course. But at 8:45 p.m., shortly after dinner, he crashed and immediately posted an unoptimistic photo and video. The racing car came level with him and he reappeared in Taghmout shortly after. And he scratched.  __Philippe Vullioud__ takes the lead tonight.

__Justinas__ était en train de réaliser un chrono incroyable malgré un arrêt obligé (rivière km 260) puis une sortie de piste lui rajoutant 26km. Le compte Instagram de l’AMR annonçait même qu’il devançait de 2 heures le temps de Sofiane de 2020 a parcours quasi similaire. Mais à 20:45, un peu après avoir dîné, il a chuté et il a publié aussitôt une photo et une vidéo peu optimistes. La voiture de course est venue à son niveau et il est réapparu à Taghmout un peu après, avant d'abandonner. __Philippe Vullioud__ prend ce soir le lead.

CRASH & SCRATCH FOR JUSTINAS

Philippe Vullioud arrived in second position at CP, three hours after Justinas Leveika who is mysteriously out of the route : we can imagine that the organization has re-route the race to avoid rivers or something else ? or does he have another reason (or problem) ? 

*Will Justinias go back to the official route ?*

But after a few tens of minutes, __Justinas__ turns around, it seems that he missed a junction towards a gravel path (red line at point A) and that he rode incorrectly more than 12 kilometers on tarmac (blue line) outside the route !
