__Antonio Francisco__ and __Bruno Inça__ rode all the race in second position and finished as the fastest pair in 3 days 6 hours 50 minutes around 10 hours (and maybe some more kilometers) after Sancho da Cruz. 

In solo category, __Moncayo Jiménez__ and __Leo Kaindl__ also finished in less than four days.

Still on the road, __Hanna Claesdotter__ imagined some song titles for the soundtrack of At Last Lost movie.

First pair

After a last checkpoint in the harbour of Sao Jacinto and a stop in front of the ocean in Toreira (it seems that every checkpoints had subcheckpoints), __Sancho da Cruz__ was - at around four oc´lock in the night - the first finisher of the first edition of At Last Lost. Chapeau, despite of the rain, he rode 1013 km and 17000 m of elevation in 69 hours to visit all the checkpoints.

Four riders have already passed what seems to be the checkpoint 5 : the panorama of Valença do Douro. The pair __Antonio Francisco__ and __Bruno Inça__ had a different route compared to __Sancho da Cruz__, but the leader is now more than four hours in front of the pair and isn't likely to be joined before the arrival. __Moncayo Jiménez__ has just arrived at the CP.

The Italian Giuseppe Colucci ([@wizardofozzo](https://www.instagram.com/wizardofozzo)) and the greek __Orestis Kapetanopoulos__ ([@orestis_kapetanopoulos](https://www.instagram.com/orestis_kapetanopoulos/)) renamed the race "At Last Wet" !

This is an opportunity to highlight the diversity of nations present on the list of riders: Portugal, but also Germany, Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden. 12 riders from 8 different countries!

Those riders weren't not in Bela Vistas Hotel just for some rest, they decided to scratch : Pair 14/15 Carlos and Alessandro stopped due to struggling with the rain. 

Frank Borst (#4) also scratched : he explained that he was confronted with more climbs than he expected and that he was feeling not prepared.

As the race director David Cruz says, "we all expected sunny days in Portugal at this time of the year".

DNF updates at Bela Vistas

After 48 hours of racing, __Sancho sa Cruz__ will soon have covered 650 km and he has a lead of 35/40 km over the pair __Antonio Francisco__ and __Bruno Inça__. All three passed the emblematic CP4 of __Miranda do Douro__, on the Spanish border, with the panorama of the gorges of the famous river.

I wrongly wrote yesterday that the North of Portugal had not experienced any major bikepacking events, it is however  appropriate to cite the confidential __[Portugal Divide](https://portugaldivide.com/en/portugal-divide/)__, a challenge on a free course intended to connect the four cardinal points of the country via the highest point and by the geodesic center of the country. Around fifty riders did it and are on the honor roll since 2018.  CP4 of At Last Lost is not far from Penha das Torres, the easternmost point of that challenge.

The leader of the race headed southwest through the Tras-Os-Montes (Upper Douro). Behind, no retirements are to be reported among the twelve competitors.

Regarding the originality of the route, __Franck Borst__ (@franklin_rides) has the exclusivity of certain route choices: he joined CP3 by passing to the West via Salto from Villa Real and he leaves by a more southern than the others up to Valpaços.

After CP3, the lake formed by the Alto Rabagão dam divided the riders. __Guillaume Grenet__ and the pair __Alessandro Pace__ and __Carlos Munoz__ are currently experimenting with passing through the north shore of the lake.

Right in front, the Bruno/Antonio pair has just turned towards Mogadouro and is attempting a variation of the leader's route. Suspense!

After two days on the mystery magical tour

After 27 hours of racing, __Sancho Da Cruz__ has ridden 475km and took the lead, followed by the pair __Antonio Francisco__ and __Bruno Inça__. The night was some wet, but they are already in the direction of CP4.

After one day on the mystery magical tour

In the proliferation of bikepacking races, [AT LAST LOST](https://www.finisterra.cc/at-last-lost?fbclid=PAAaZ7840LPf9t4nMiq_zHJKeEdGs9WlOCG6iXIkwbsrcXuSRLt_wynl_WwMo_aem_AfY6Tm-4lNq6REDi9OX_rw1kfysebhYvwqE4heCKGN4lhmGUnmhk53Y89g9wL45Bzkk) is characterized by three points: 1/ an innovative free-navigation race concept whose checkpoints are revealed as you go, like some Alleycats; 2/ a new and unexplored playground in the Atlas of races: the North of Portugal; 3/ a master of the games and a signature: David Cruz of Finisterra.cc, initiator of the Heading SouthWest (1400km race on a magnificent fixed route in the south of inland Portugal since 2022).

Superphosphate, the telegraph and the vaccine against poliomyelitis all have in common that they were discovered simultaneously by two teams of researchers. The "mystery race" principle appeared simultaneously in the spring of 2023 with the announcement of the Atlas Mountain Race and __The Unknown Race__, which then generated a lot of interest and curiosity of the bikepacking community. 

Unfortunately, few registrants have confirmed their coming to Portugal despite the beautiful playground and a favorable month of September. Only six solo riders (unknown rookies from the past race results index on dotwatcher.cc) and six pair riders (experienced riders) have confirmed their presence. At least it will be easier to follow the race map than on the recent Transcontinental Race and its 300 superimposed dots. __Omar di Felice__ finally gave up to come, it's a shame, we would have seen the winner of the longest fixed route of the year coming to play on the freest route of the year. 

The concept of the race assumes even more than usual that the riders commit to respecting the principles and ethics. It would be so easy to have an associated router analyzing the map and preparing live routes from their office to send to the rider. Bikepacking events are based on the trust and honesty of the participants, and it is a strong feeling to be able to believe in it. 

The commentary of such a race also raises questions. How to tell the route choices of competitors without potentially helping the pursuers. The question does not arise because I unfortunately do not have time to comment in detail on what is happening in Portugal.
