Race Preview

Despite the trials faced by the riders in this years edition the sprit of the racers and those following the race remained high. We expected crazy conditions and rainy weather causing hike a bike and slow going however the opposite rang true with compacted damp sand and gravel running fast and making this a super speedy edition. Lower temperatures also made for faster riding over the first day and a half. This did change once the initial storms cleared and riders still on the course were treated to higher temperatures through Tabernas, the coastal section and the final 200km into the mountains with the "Climb from Almeria" being the biggest challenge for most of the riders this year.

One of the aspects that troubled riders this year that we have not mentioned yet was stomach issues. Ulrich has mentioned that he suffered some issues, Tristan Cardew had some unplanned for downtime because of his stomach on the first night and Nils Correvon also scratched due to this. Stomach issues can strike for many reasons, timing sports nutrition wrong and eating bad food are two big reasons. This is especially easy to do if you are riding hard and taking in a lot of sports nutrition or have been carrying a whopper up a mountain like Cynthia). Another reason more pertinent to this edition is that in  bad weather its easier to pick up dirt on your water bottles and hands. Some of the riders are also putting it down to dirty water caused by the rain runoff but either way it had an impact on the race for many of the riders.

Whilst we saw the fastest rides yet with the top 5 this year besting 2022's fast time set by Seb Breuer. You could say the slight shortening of the track and the changes to the route made the ride "easier" this year but Rob Brittons average speed of 19.53 KM/H vs Sebs 17.9 KM/H is much higher! I'll leave the dotwatchers to ponder. The pairs time of 45 hrs 28 mins set by Sam William Andrews & Jesse Yates  beats all previous attempts and would have put them top 10. A mean feat for pairs where double the people normally means double the faff! The biggest news is Cynthia and Cara's results put them in the top 10 this year which is incredible in what is considered a sprint event! Whats also incredible this year is the scratch rate. 

In 2010 in the inaugural race we saw a very low 10% scratch race but as the race was following covid restrictions the field was reduced to 94 starters and much of the field was local or more seasoned racers raring to get going after Covid. 2021 saw a very high rate of 25% (53 out of 211 starters) with most of the scratches in the first day due to the heat. In '22 we saw 18% from a field of 196 but this year a low 12% of the huge 290 starters! There were many new faces in the field so to have so many finishers this year is a big deal.

There may be a few finishers out of time. Currently the tracker shows riders William Horsting, Clayton Drotsky and Alberto Viciana as not having a finish time and in the pairs Luis Alaix & Javier Montero. They were all on the final section from Trevelez at the time so if not it was so close for them, David thinks they have a finish so fingers crossed that its just an error on the trackers page and they all got their print and trophy. Honorable mention also goes to Timothy Skilton who finished minutes out of time and having gps problems that sent him on the wrong route from Trevelez. He hasn't marked much of his adventure on instagram but it does seem like he got round on ham alone so a remarkable ride if thats true.

It was especially heartwarming to see the locals being behind the race. Gor became the biggest party town in Adalucia but reviewing the stories of so many riders meant I saw the doors of many hostels and hotels being kept open late for riders and nothing being too much trouble for them. The positive impact that the teams race has on the area is huge, creating income and supporting local business. The work that the race organisation has done with local councils and businesses this year is plain to see. Gor filmmaker Santiago Jiménez has also documented the race and put his film on youtube as part of these efforts. The finish in Capiliera may seem a little odd for some however it does provide ample food and accomodation for the riders as well as a quiet yet welcoming atmosphere for the finish. It can also be strange to go straight back into the city after completing one of these events so its a beautiful end to the race without having to deal with the bustle of Granada right away. Many riders have passed through and taken advantage of the terrace at the finish line, you can imagine the story telling going on here as they all catch up over some beers.

This race is one that sticks with you, not content with the finishers trophy and print I've seen a few riders take it a step further in commemorating the event.

Worselands/Badlands and the best times. Wrapping it up.

Its the final day of Badlands and riders are finishing their final pedal into the mountains. They have until 4pm this afternoon to make it within the time cut and it seems like all but Tim Skilton and Simon Bond are on the final approad up to Trevelez this morning. Again riders have been starting off early to avoid the heat and some even finishing early. [Marcos De Paiva Buenos](https://www.instagram.com/bikesutras/) has been riding from 5:30 am to 16:30 and getting a full rest every night. This approach may not be fast but he has been steady, seen the whole route in daylight and felt good throughout. He finished yesterday and is currently pedalling to Malaga instead of back to Granada "downhill all the way".

[Javis Cantos](https://www.instagram.com/j.cantos79/) (25th Finisher) shows us some of the post race issues. Saddle sores were endemic and we all know riding these things can just hurt and raise and weaknesses our bodies have bit he's suffering from some post race oedema!

[Matthew Ringrow](https://www.instagram.com/racing_ringers/) came in early yesterday but really wanted to finish the night before. He was a victim of severe saddle sores so stopped 50km from the finish as it was getting a bit much for him. He also broke his front light broke so his night riding was limited to riding slowly by headtorch or a bit faster if others with mega lights were in the vicinity and could light the way.

[Therese Sundström](https://www.instagram.com/3therese/) gave me an update yesterday, she is a testament to the strength of mind over our bodies. She hasn't trained for this much and is riding a friends bike. Because of the imperfect bike fit she is another victim of saddle sores which are limiting her ability to climb faster. Her energy levels have fluctuated over the course but I'm so glad to see her on her way into the finish now.

[Graham Baxter](https://www.instagram.com/p/Cw7CAHfM-hb/?img_index=1) Graham Baxter reports "This was by far the hardest event I've ever done". Everything hurts and he has pins and needles in feet, fingers and his back is going to take some time to recover. He's an Triathlon age group European champ in multiple distances and rides Ironman distance so is no slouch. To give you an idea he rode through in 62 hours, looking like he had a big sleep on the first night with a stopped time of 7 hours 45 and then found it within himself to take minimal rest on the second night and power on through to the finish.

Many of the day 4 finishers found it in their legs to take on the Valeta climb to head back to Granada yesterday. Those without saddle sores or other sore bits that is! It looked like there were a few groups enjoying the scenery and tarmac descent back into Granada. A good night sleep can save your race, or give you the energy to take on that final ride!

Badlands final day

Like a lot of riders still out there Therese Sundström had a hard day yesterday. The heat was a lot for her in the afternoon. She had an early stop and meal with other riders and the consensus there was to get a full night in proper accommodation and start "fresh" the next day. It looks like she was up and riding before dawn, and it looks like has had a much better day today, her riding companions even stopping for a swim. She's now into the final 200km and headed up the rocky and hard Los Pedrolos climb in the heat of the afternoon. Sometimes a proper nights sleep can really help you out and get you a lot further than battling on through sleep deprivation and tiredness.

Velocio have been running some very good daily updates, featuring some of the locals and why they are getting involved. Today they featured one of the clothes stores in Capliera as they normally get a big influx of riders needing some clean clothes after the race. At the moment the amount of interesting outfits has been dissapointingly low although Robin (2nd finisher) has been obliging by wandering around in a towel. As we have less sponsored riders, or at least more riders without people waiting for them at the finish coming in I'm hoping to see a few more interesting fashion choices happening. Will keep you updated there.

There have been more DNFs today with 25 now showing on the board. [Fernando Rey](https://www.instagram.com/piterarey/?hl=en)  scratching at Enix after a considerable amount of walking up the Los Pedrolos climb. He looked to be finding it hard yesterday morning. Spanish speakers may find some further clues to his difficulties on his stories but I'm afraid mine only extends to ordering coffee. Currently there are 25 DNFs on the tracker which is only 8% of the starters, a very low rate considering we were expecting worselands. 290 started, 126 have finished so far so 139 riders are still out there! And in case anyone doubts my maths, you are right to; but I am counting pairs as one person!

2020 had a scratch rate of 10%, '21 was a meaty 25% and '22 was 18%. Currently 10% feels very low considering the number of starters but we will see  how it goes as there are some tired legs and heads out there now!

Badlands Day 4

Badlanders are now enjoying good weather, Ice creams, beers, the beach.... you would think they are on holiday!

Temperature wise things are now hotting up in the main field, the bad weather has passed and only a few riders yet to cross the Tabernas desert. We are glad to see that the safe routes have done their job and kept our dots moving without being washed away or bogged down in peanut butter mud. We can potentially expect some showers tomorrow afternoon in the high mountains around the Alpujarra however we can now expect heat to play a factor in the main field. Whilst the tracker weather doesn't look too fierce, slow off road climbs in full sun can really heat up and with so much climbing in the last 200km we may see the remaining riders slowing down.

Last night [Chloe Geoghan](https://www.instagram.com/chloegeoghegan/?hl=en) was having a midnight ice cream in Tabernas and Pair [Federico Damiani](https://www.instagram.com/damianifed/?hl=en) & [Asja Paladin](https://www.instagram.com/asjapaladin/?hl=en) stopped on the beach for Beers and Ice cream in the afternoon. They also took advantage of the amenities offered by Almeria last night to get kebab and a hotel, washing off that desert dust sure feels great.

A lot of riders had an early start to the day to beat the heat, most riders are trying to get an early start to get the KMs in but now it feels more pressing. Federico and Asja where well up the climb away from Almeria in the early hours (a wise choice). 

[Fernando Rey](https://www.instagram.com/piterarey/?hl=en) was also up very early this morning to try and get across the remainder of Tabernas before it got light and was treated to dawn climbing out of the valley. It also seems like the lack of coffee before starting made his early start hard work.

[Torsten Frank](https://www.instagram.com/torsten_frank/?hl=en) reached the coast this afternoon. He seems unaffected by the heat and looked to be enjoying some fancier than average ham on toast this morning. This is the staple of the area and it's wise to add the additional olive oil to keep those calories incoming.

[Robert Farken](https://www.instagram.com/robertfarken/?hl=en), our fast middle distance runner, appears to be having more of a touring experience with his mates [Patrick Pilz](https://www.instagram.com/iampatrickpilz?hl=en) & Pascal Unbehaun in the pairs. We all have different experiences here and its great to see riders having fun and enjoying it, as well as people pushing themselves as an athletic endeavour. [Chris Hall](https://www.instagram.com/chrishallrides/?hl=en) has also been taking the ride easy and building confidence back after his bad crash and broken wrists earlier this year. Fantastic attitudes from all of the riders joining in with the festivities in Gor and generally finding time to enjoy some of the scenery and landscapes. 

And just to top it all off, here is Fara competition winner [Marie](https://www.instagram.com/cycling_mary/?hl=en) having a lovely time in the mountains.

Badlanders on holiday? 

As the rest of the top 10 came in within 47 hours, with a huge starting roster two of them were women!

First up, in 4th place after a mechanical pushing him back into 4th, allowing Mike Mono to sweep past, [Simen Nordahl Svendsen](https://www.instagram.com/nordahlsvendsen/) rolled in early this morning. An amazing race from a rider that has only recently made the transition to ultra from gravel. [Fara](https://www.instagram.com/faracycling/) has been keeping an eye on Simen and provided some updates. This rider will definitely be one to watch if he continues to press into ultra-territory!

Next up in 5th and 6th are [Patxi Plazaola](https://www.instagram.com/patxiplazaola/), [Alex Martínez](https://www.instagram.com/alexmartinez_51/). Alex and Paxti played an impressive game of leapfrog throughout the final hours of their race with both dropping slightly from the front 4 and passing one another throughout the night. After a hard fought battle, both of these riders continued strong and held a solid gap from those behind.

In 7th, 8th and 9th were Santi Armero, Cynthia Fraser, who we've added a post for below, and [Gereon Tewes](https://www.instagram.com/gereon.cycling/). Santi was the leader of the chasing group just behind the lead bunch. A few times it looked like he may bridge the gap but didn't quite make it. He still finished 7th after a strong race. Cynthia came in just after our first pair, Sam William Andrews & Jesse Yates who finished 6 minutes earlier in 45 hrs 28 mins. Cynthia took almost 20 hours off her finish time from last year as mentioned before, but this is quite an incredible feat! Gereon is the second Fara athlete in the top 10, this Norwegian bike brand picked some strong riders to headline Badlands 2023! Gereon is best known for his recent first finish in the pairs at Transcontinental, but a top 10 in Badlands really does stand him as a legend of many disciplines!

Rounding out the top 10 was [Cara Dixon](https://www.instagram.com/_caradixon/), previous winner of the TransAtlantic Way. She's added another prolific race to her palmares, a second at Badlands is a true accolade!

The Rest of the Top 10

Last night Jana Kesenheimer took a quick 1 hour 50 break which was fortuitously matched by Caroline Livesay. It looks like this was a calculated move with Caroline's tracking showing stopped time earlier than Jana which would have increased the gap and given Jana some visual breathing room.

Aside from her rests her stopping time in between is impressively low and her final finish time of 52 hrs 30 mins brings her in well under Lael's 1st place time of 57 hours and 42 last year. The bar this year has been well and truly reset for the women.

Caroline is currently 712.46 km deep into the race, a finish will come very soon!

Last night our pairs winners rolled into Capiliera Sam Andrews and Jesse Yates after 45 hours 28 minutes. A Super quick time and a big step up from the Western Cyclocross league these two have ridden continuously throughout with very little stopping time and no rests. They were leapfrogging with 3 others for the lead of the race until Almeria where they pressed on into the hills and gave themselves a 3 hour advantage by the end of the race. It's a big deal to be as efficient as these two have been with only 5% stopping time, this time would have plopped them just inside the overall top ten. 

Simon Hahnenbruch & Philippe Béchet, seasoned ultracyclists have also honed their craft. Philipe practiced a small nap only strategy at the Bright Midnight earlier this year and thinking on your feet as a pair with Linda Farczadi at the unknown race. Simon took 3rd at last years Bohemian Border Bash so both strong riders in their own right and a formidable team. They had a marginally slower moving speed and a full 2 hours more stopping time than 1st place. I think Jesses "I'd rather die than stop" mantra really made the difference in this race.

At this time it looks like our podium will be completed by Eduardo Talavera & Jorge Losada around lunchtime with 48km to go. 4th place David Rovira & Jordi Bernatallada have a 30km gap to them so the pressure doesn't seem high however anything could happen!

In a provisional time of 45H 34M, Cynthia Frazier rode to victory in the women’s race having held second woman, Cara Dixon, off for the second half of the race. Cynthia’s pacing for this race was a textbook display of riding her own race; she moved up a position on GC between each of the final three checkpoints to finally crack the top ten on the route between the final CP and the finish. She also finished over 12 hours faster than her '22 time.

Cynthia and Cara shared some early kilometres together, but by the time the finish in Capileira came round, Cynthia had squeezed a mere 45 minute lead over Cara, who eventually finished 10th overall. We’ve never seen one woman finish in the top 10 at Badlands in its three previous editions, let alone two. It’s such a short and fast race that it’s often been the domain of the men but hopefully this year serves as an inflection point where Cynthia and Cara have paved the way for women in future editions.

The podium is complete!

Behind Rob, Robin Gemperle took second step on the podium to cement a tremendous and busy year of racing for Robin. His early season win at the Atlas Mountain Race was backed up with his second win of the season at the HOPE 1000 and a second place finish on GC at the Transcontinental Race. He’s claimed that he was riding so hard, his phone stayed in his backpacks so we’re hoping to learn of all the good stories over the coming days. Congratulations Robin for a stellar ride!

Mike Mono completed the podium and bettered last year’s result from 10th position, we love to see it! He shared that on the first night of the race he was struck by stomach issues which caused him to vomit and forced him to take an hour’s race. He was able to overcome this early setback to finish 40 minutes ahead of fourth place, Simen Nordahl Svendsen. Simen was 3rd coming through Trevelez but was struggling with mechanical issues and his bike was locked in one of the easiest gears. He lost a lot of ground to Mike on the approach to Trevelez and was overtaken by Mike after the climb out of the town. Both riders had problems but overcame them and show that you don't have to have a perfect ride to finish high up the rankings, having the mental flexibility to overcome them is key. Mike has clearly been moved by his time at Badlands and claims that “you always grow when riding Badlands”, also learnt on this edition that if you keep going, you might surprise yourself. Chapeau Mike!

The Podium is Complete

He's done it! Rob Britton Has made it to the end of the track in Capileira in a crazy time of __38 hrs 20 mins.__ His pro stage-race pedigree quickly saw him take change at the head of the race and barely leave the 1st place position. Despite being his longest single stage to date his results this year in the American gravel and MTB races have been outstanding and good practice for riding this kind of event. With many of this year's field having Traka 360 and other similar distance races under their belt these do seem to be providing a springboard into the sprint distance ultra. I'm sure the feeling of this being over beats any Tour of the Gila GC Win!

The finishers banner in Capileira is another testament to how the local area is supporting the race. The town council has put up this banner to guide riders in with no prompting from the race organisation. It's heartwarming to see the riders being welcomed as (slightly mad) heroes wherever they go with the race gathering more local following year on year.

Badlands is a true test of gravel skill. At 750km, this race is a difficult balance between non-stop riding or adventuring through the Spanish wilderness. With difficult terrain, sharp climbs and deserts to cross it'll be exciting from start to finish.
