Race Preview

If riders thought their biggest challenge of the day was to climb 800m of curvaceous climb towards Cigaru they were greatly mistaken. As soon as the riders descended down the scenic hill, the scorching heat, wavy road and strong headwind welcomed them rather relentlessly.

As RACE LEADER Cap#19 Dzaki pedaled through toward Kebumen, we saw a few chinks in his armor as he progressed at a slower pace than the day before with more stops.

Behind him, the chasing group start to trickle in to CP1 just before lunch time, while the rest of the group battling and pushing their own will to keep moving to battle with CP1 cut off time.

Last minute CP1 closing saw heart wrenching drama where Salman Faridi, Bob Aria Baruna  and Endy Anitjarsa sprinting the last 10km to find they missed cut off time by minutes! In total 6 riders missed CP1, they are:

Cap#24 - Salman Faridi
Cap#36 - Yayak M. Saat

They may decide to continue to ride to the finish line as non-competitive riders (NC) and will remain trackable in our live tracking.

It was a great day to start a long ride. The first day started in a humble manner, filled with excitement and finished with a bang!

Cap#22 Adipati Bob lead the pack for 100km or so, followed by Cap#19 Dzaki Wardhana in 2nd, Cap#11 Sakti Firmansyah in 3rd and Cap#20 Piston Andriyanto in 4th. But as the day grew hotter and the headwind blew strong, Dzaki overtook Bob and consistently extended his lead. Behind him, Bob, Sakti and Piston frequently traded places.

Our female riders, Cap#07 Citra and Cap#06 Christine were going strong, with Citra leading and safely entered the fishing port city Pelabuhan Rata just before dark and decided to push through the night.

Sawarna climb out was no doubt a highlight of day one, with participants caught off guard by the relentlessness of the climbs, and the fact that they have to climb it all under scorching heat. Our photographers were having a fantastic time documenting these battles.

Eventually, Dzaki was the first rider to reach CP1 at Rancabuaya just after midnight having spent 19 hours on the saddle, covered 400km and 4300m elevation gain. The next riders were pair Cap#21 Rezki & Cap#28 Ichan and soloist Bob followed some 100 KM behind.

Bentang Jawa is an unsupported ultra cycling race across Java Island, starting from Carita Beach at the west side all the way to Banyuwangi at the eastern side of the Island. Each participant can join the race as an individual or as a team of two (pair).	
The route will cover a distance of approximately 1500 Kilometers with approximately 16.000 meter of elevation gain, going through 5 provinces, and need to be completed within 156 hours.

Along the way, there will be coastal sections, lots of rolling hills, mountain stages, and even roads going through national forest area. Despite all the various scenery, majority of the road surface is tarmac.

The race will start on Sunday, 3 October 2021, 5:30 AM Indonesian Western Time (GMT+7), and ends on Saturday, 9 October 2021, 5:30 PM Indonesian Western Time.

There will be 2 check points along the route:
CP 1 at KM 400, cut of time at 4 October 2021, 10:00 PM Indonesia Western Time.
CP 2 at KM 1100, cut of time at 7 October 2021, 23:59 PM Indonesia Western Time.

A total of 38 participants will begin their journey soon. We’ll be posting daily updates as the race proceeds.
