The Bikes!

Over the past few day’s riders have been rolling out of the mountains and into Montreux, concluding their amazing adventures through Switzerland’s spectacular landscape and diverse regions. Most with wide smiles, tired legs and big appetites. Congratulations to all riders on completing their adventures. Enjoy eating, sleeping and sharing your stories. 

The 1st placed women is __Hana Uhlikova__, we have little information on her bike packing and ultra racing background. However, what we do know is that she put in a stunning ride, completing the course in 5d 14h 34m, finishing in 21st overall. Her time is also the 3rd fastest women’s time ever, with only route legend __Lael Wilcox__ going quicker then Hana. 

This year’s edition (from afar) looked to have fairly favourable weather for most of the week, until the past few days where there has been storms and high winds. The good weather would have definitely been welcomed by the riders. Electric fences, metal gates and thunderstorms are not a fun mix when you are on top of a mountain. The change in weather brought some new challenges, creating some very tricky and muddy conditions.

Times were quick, with many returning riders putting in personal bests and the FKT (fastest known time) being broken. [__Robin Gemperle__](https://www.instagram.com/robingemperle/) was clearly in good shape after winning the Atlas Mountain Race earlier in the year, he has carried his exceptional form through to set the new FKT, 3d 12h 31m. After some late tracker issues second place rider [__Markus Hager’s__](https://www.instagram.com/mhultrabike/) time was confirmed, 3d 18h 31m. This is Markus’s third completion of the Hope1000 and his fastest time yet. [Kevin Tanner](https://www.instagram.com/kevin.tanner91/) rounded of the podium in a time of 4d 6h 17h and was welcomed in by his family.

It can’t go unmentioned that event organiser and route creator __Willi Felix__ has completed his 7th Hope1000. I’m sure he is enjoying the finish with all the other riders and enjoying their stories. Congratulations Willi and thank you for another amazing event. 

46 riders have now made it to Montreux, there are still 10 riders out on course continuing their adventures. For many the time is irrelevant, it’s all about the personal sense of achievement and conquering a route with so much climbing. All we see from our screens is a little dot moving with a ticking clock attached to it, we don’t get the full picture of every dot’s experience, challenges and small wins. We are grateful for all the pictures and updates we get from anyone who has shared their journey over the past week. Some challenges are larger than others and some of the challenges are part of the fun of taking an event like this, such as finding somewhere to sleep each night or figuring out what you Garmin actually means …

Martin Steiger had some issues with his Garmin, but apparently it was just letting him drink certain Austrian wine.

After a 1000km of riding and 30,000 meters of climbing the body needs to rest and recover, which is well deserved. The riders will be hungry for days, you can’t eat as many calories as you burn daily. The body takes a beating and some riders will experience numb hands, swollen ankles and feet. The whole body will ache and will welcome plenty of sleep in a proper bed. It’s nice to see riders sharing their unique recovery routines.

The remaining 10 riders out on course are not forgotten and we will be willing them all on towards the finish and over the last few mountains. One of the riders still out on course is the one of the two female riders looking to complete the route this year, __Vreni Kurmann__ has just past the 850km point and we will be following her all the way into Montreux. 


A Week of Swiss Adventures 

Hana Uhlikova is the first women to make it to Montreux, in an impressive time of 5d 12h 34m. Amazing ride congratulations Hana.

We have a full podium, last night __Markus Hager__ rolled into Montreux in second place completing his third Hope 1000, impressive stuff. Another amazing ride equalling his finishing position of last year, I also believe this is a new personal best for Markus, however due to a tracker issue we will await to confirm his official finishing time. The podium was rounded out by __Kevin Tanner__, completing the course in 4D 6H 17M. He had a very consistent ride, with regular short stops, congratulations.

__Andy Styger__ was only 3 and half hours behind Kevin, finishing in 4D 9H 46M which is a new personal best for Andy by quite a margin, completing his second Hope 1000. A very tight finish between 4th and 5th, __Daniel Gӧtz__ completes the top 5 only 3 minutes behind Andy, this is such a small gap after 1005km or riding over 4 and half days. Brilliant rides all round. 

__Thomas Boury__ who contracted shingles 48hrs before the start has battled his way through and taken 6th place. Thomas has kept us updated throughout his ride with daily updates as he battled on and finished strong.

Our leading lady continues to cover good ground, __Hana Kulikova__ has almost covered 850km’s. Today she has tackled the highest summit of the route, the Stϋbleni which stands at 2109 meters. Yet another mesmerizing climb and summit view, this one is a little different to the rest. A long wiggly open climb mainly on single track as it snakes towards the top. It is all rideable other than a few km’s across the top, it is a stark rocky track which is easier and safer to walk. You really do feel like you are on top of the world, not many peaks on the route are so open and isolated. A raw beautiful climb which sticks in your mind and one you don’t want to be stuck on in bad weather.

Riders continue to edge closer towards the finish, we expect a five more riders to finish this evening. Currently 6 riders have finished, 60 are still active and 28 have scratched.

Riders continue to battle the local dairy traffic. Not only does the language and culture vairy as you cross Switzerland but so does the attitude of the cows. The cows in the East and South seem very unbothered by cyclist and make it clear they aren’t moving for you. However, in the west the cows seem to be more skittish like sheep, making descending through a herd challenging as you just don’t know which direction they will head in.

A Full Podium 

__Robin Gemperle__ has made it to Montreux in 3D 12H 31M, which looks to be a new FKT, taking 4hrs 25mins off the time set by __Marin de Saint-Exupéry__ in 2021. An epic performance from Robin which looked very calculated and controlled, sleeping twice, although his second rest was only for one hour. His extremely lightweight set up paid off, paired with much more favourable conditions compared to the 2022 addition, he pieced together an amazing race, congratulations! We will wait to hear from Robin, as we are yet to see the unofficial obligatory photo with Freddy at the finish.

__Markus Hager__ is not far behind and is just 30km away from the finish, he still has plenty of climbing before he gets there. Another very impressive ride from Markus as he looks to improve upon the time he set last year. 

As always in ultra events the last climb teases you, you seem so close to the finish yet there is still a large obstacle in your way, but your brain thinks you have made it. The final climb starts up a steep farm track, a loose rocky surface with switch backs where you need to pick your line carefully. Towards the top the route joins a larger hard compact track, where the gradient is steady. You think you have reached the top and can role down into the finish, but no there is a single-track section full of tree roots and a few gates before you reach the descent. The view across the top is beautiful as you look out across Lake Geneva.

The remainder of the top 5 stays unchanged. __Kevin Tanner__ (3rd ) is nearing in on the 900km mark with a healthy lead over __Andy Styger__ (4th). Will they push through the night to try and go under 4 days? __Daniel Gӧtz__ rounds out the top five. There is less than 35km separating places 4th to 11th, this will be an interesting night.

__Hana Uhlikova__ is still the leading lady and currently in 15th position, she is having an incredible ride. __Verni Kurmann__ is the only other remaining women out on course, she has now crossed the 400km mark. 

A large proportion of the riders are now in the region of the Alps and hopefully taking in the mesmerising views. Peaks of mountains tower around them as they ascend, ascend and ascend. One spectacular climb (they all are really) is up to Kleine Scheidegs, a fairly steady climb that starts out on tarmac and gets steeper and steeper towards the top as the surface changes to lose gravel. The climb is overlooked by the Eiger, a distinctive rugged peak that draws your attention as you climb.

Some climbs are only permissible for farm vehicles, bikes and local busses. These climbs tend to be very narrow with few places to pass. A key detail is that the busses have priority and don’t like slowing down for cyclist. This information is worth knowing before you get in an altercation with a Swiss bus driver.

By this point the legs are starting to feel it, nearly 4 days of climbing takes it’s toll and a good sleep is required. The small local hotels are a welcoming sight, full of quality local beers (a recovery drink) and carb filled Mac and Cheese loaded with potatoes. However, you want to select your hotel carefully as riders last year stayed in a hotel hosting a farmer’s conversion and found out how much the local farmers liked to party.

Robin Gemperle wins the 2023 Hope 1000

After his quick nap yesterday, __Robin Gemperle__ has pushed on through the night and today, opening up his largest lead yet of roughly 50km, even after getting caught up in some [local morning traffic](https://www.instagram.com/stories/robingemperle/3128410506071649571/).

__Markus Hager__ is still in second place and making steady progress heading towards the 800km mark. He appears to be taking shorter more regular stops and hasn’t had a long sleep up to this point. In third place is __Kevin Tanner__ who looks to be on similar plan to Markus. Kevin has made great progress in the last 24hrs over taking __Andy Styger__, who sits in fourth. __Daniel Götz__ retains his position and rounds out the top five. 

The rest of the top ten are just separated by 22km, so we can expect to see a lot of jostling in positions over the next few days. 

The front riders have made it into the Alps, where the landscape changes once again. As the riders get close to the Italian border, they will experience a change in cultures as they pass through the towns. The language changes and there is a little more hustle and bustle, along with plenty of Italian food to refuel on. The Alps offer a different challenge, the climbs are longer, surfaces in general are very good as the tracks are hard compact and very wide making the majority of the climbs rideable. However, the climate can change quickly, bright sunshine can quickly turn to thunderstorms and rain, you don’t want to get caught out at the top. There are plenty of cattle sheds to take shelter in as the weather passes, as __Robin Gemperle__ had to this afternoon.

Before the riders hit the Alps, they pass the organised resupply point. Where they can pick up supplies, they had sent ahead from the start of the race. An opportunity for some clean clothes, pick up tools or fresh batteries. There is always a warm welcome as the riders are greeted by a local supporter with his horn.

A large proportion of the riders this morning tackled the climb up to Napf. This section of the course has some of the worst tracks and one of the few sections of hike-a-bike. Once at the top the views are worth it and it feels like a real reward, as they sit looking out towards the Alps. At the summit there is a small cabin, an honesty shop open 24hrs, take what you need and leave payment as per the price list. This concept is very odd to many but is common across Switzerland, selling local produce or supplies like you may find from a kiosk.

__Hana Uhlikova__ is still the leading lady as she closes in on 600km mark and is placed 16th overall. She is now only one of three remaining women left out on route, the other two are both Swiss riders __Verni Kurmann __and __Muriel Graber__.

12 more riders have scratched over the last 24hrs, bringing the total to 20. One to note is __Jenny Tough__, Jenny was the second placed women on course. After a long stop of over 10 hours, she did make an effort to get going again but clearly something was up and has subsequently scratched. We hope she is okay. 


More Mountains on Monday 

The overnight leader [Robin Gemperle](https://www.instagram.com/robingemperle/) found a nice spot in what appeared to be a building site basement for a quick afternoon nap. [Markus Hager](https://www.instagram.com/mhultrabike/) took the lead, but Robin has pushed on and the pair are almost together. I think we can expect a big night shift.

Sunday Snapshots

Sunday brings a whole different challenge to any other day. Nearly all amenities close on Sundays, the riders would have needed to make plans for todays resupplies. A big meal on Saturday night is a necessity and along with packing the bike full of food. Your best chance of finding supplies on Sundays are train stations where you may find a small kiosk, there is a network of vending machines across Switzerland that can be saviours. If you are lucky, you may find a small takeaway or kebab house open in large towns.

Fresh water is never far away, every small village and town has fresh water fountains. There are also plenty of fresh water streams running off the mountains.

One of the many rewards of cycling across Switzerland is the changing landscape and culture. There are four languages spoken across the country which changes as you cross it. From the start in the east you cross regions which have a largely German influence, the towns are pristine, the country side is rolling and the surfaces are good.

Today most of the riders have passed through the town of Brunnen, a small town on Lake Lucerne which is a picturesque spot. Views from the town span across the lake which is circled by imposing mountains. From here the riders wiggle their way around the lake and then head up the Wildspitzstrasse which is the highest point of the ride so far at just over 1,500 meters. Up to this point most of the climbing has been on good quality tracks or roads, once they cross the top it turns the track turns to grass and the decent is a little rocky.

The next section is the flattest part of the route, rolling through green countryside with no major climbs for roughly 90km. The front runners will make it up and over the next climb to Napf, which is spectacular and a personal highlight of the route. 


A Sunday in Switzerland 

The first day can be a big challenge as there are a lot of nerves, the pace is high and you know there are a lot more challenges ahead of you. 

The front end has started to take some shape, as per usual a select few rides have steam rolled through the night and broken away from the main cluster of riders. There are four riders who have made it over 400km. Robin Gemperle leads the way as he heads towards the 500km mark, 11km back is Markus Hager, who had a great ride last year finishing in second, can he better his 4D 1H 37H? A little further back are Kevin Tanner and Andy Styger who look to be over lapping each other. 
Thomas Boury has made a steady start after contracting shingles 48 hours before the start, his effort looks measured as he stopped to sleep after 300km to give his body a chance to recover. 

The conditions look optimal for a fast pace, there doesn’t appear to of been any major weather concerns and the temperature looks ideal. Robin Gemperle started with a super light setup, he is clearly out to put down a strong time and looks to be doing so. There is a long way to go as they haven’t reached the high mountains yet. Will Marin de Saint-Exupéry’s 3D 16H 56M record stand at the end of this? 

The leading women is Hana Uhlikova, who is sitting towards the front of the main group. She looks to be on a steady pass as she stopped for a few hours sleep and got riding early. Less than 25km behind is Jenny Tough, who is an incredibly experienced adventurer and looks to be riding a very consistent ride. 

8 riders have scratched over the first 24hrs. Most notably Kurt-Aurel Stoessel, who has 6 Hope1000 completions under his belt.

And they’re off, an idyllic start down on the water front of Lake Constance as the sun comes up. A fitting start for such a picturesque route. The riders set off in small groups, at intervals, in reverse age order. A nice way to spread out the field and mix everyone up. 

Willi is riding again this year, it’s always nice to see the route creator willing to suffer with the rest of the riders. Willi is a big cheerful character and loves to see people enjoying the Swiss scenery along his wiggly tour of the country. His house is on route and all riders will pass it this morning, where his family offer snacks, water and even a hose down.

This first 100km is gentle, with gravel tracks along rolling climbs, through fruit fields and forest tracks as the riders head towards the first big climb. 

As for the weather, a key factor at the start of last year’s edition as it was hit with a heat wave, where temperatures were north of 50c, this year the weather looks a little more normal, high 20’s and thunderstorms. It’s always worth listening to the locals, they know how fast the weather changes in the mountains. 

The riders are in for a spectacular treat of a route, let’s see how this plays out.
