__Hello and welcome to the 4th edition of Seven Serpents!__

I’m Saskia — cyclist, huge dot-watching fan, and your guide for the week ahead. I’m incredibly excited to take you along on this wild journey.!
I’ve had the pleasure (and pain!) of enduring Bruno’s epic — and undeniably brutal — race not once, but twice: in 2023 and 2024. Why twice? Well... I was hoping for better weather the second time around. (Let’s just say hope isn’t a strategy.)

So, what’s in store for our little serpents this year?

Seven Serpents is an 850 km ultra-cycling race that kicks off in the heart of Slovenia. 150 Riders will slither (yep, had to say it) their way along compact, fast fire roads that wind through dense national forests — home to incredible scenery, the occasional wild boar, and yes, even bears. (Don’t worry, they usually keep to themselves... usually.)

Ideally, it stays dry — but we all know how that usually goes. And the forecast for the week? Let’s call it... “emotionally varied.”

From there, it’s off to the islands of Krk and Cres, where the terrain gets rocky, wild, and occasionally vertical. Expect some gnarly hike-a-bike sections that will test riders both physically and mentally.

Then it’s back to the mainland, rolling through Slovenia once more before crossing into the hills of Italy, where the climbs get punchy and the espresso gets good.

A final gravel grind leads to a glorious descent into Trieste — but don’t celebrate too soon. There’s still one last test: city traffic. Survive that, and you’ll be greeted at the finish by Bruno, a coveted ceramic medal, and a well-earned cold beer.

The lineup is still a bit of a mystery, but we’re expecting a small yet strong women’s field. A quick snoop on the ol' social media has highlighted a few familiar names: Cristina Tamburlini ,Bianca Datola and Zuzana Bohacova, Katie-Jane L'Herpiniere, who have dabbled in a few events prior and will certainly bring some heat to the race.

On the men's side, Omar Martinello’s name jumps out. He’s back again after claiming 1st place in last year’s Quick Bite and 2nd in 2023. Definitely one to watch!

I’ll be keeping a close eye on all the serpents, from the front of the pack to the back. After all, enjoying the journey at a slower pace doesn’t necessarily make it any easier.

Welcome to Seven Serpents 2025!!!

Pojdi, pojdi, pojdi! — or "Go, go, go!" — felt like the perfect way to kick off Sunday with a bit of Slovenian vocab (1-day streak on Duolingo, thank you very much).

As is tradition, the weatherman got it wrong. According to the photographer from 7S, Marco Ricci the weather has been crazy — not ideal. Riders have faced heat, cold, rain... even hail. None of that was in the script. Some have taken cover in bakeries along the route — a classic move of survival and pastry.

It was a warm and sunny start before things went a bit T*ts up. The target is CP1: Sveta Trojica (SL), perched on a punchy 1123-metre hill — a technical climb, and probably a hike-a-bike for most.

The route so far has thrown riders down fire trails, some cheeky singletrack,now likely very muddy and eventually through Postojna and Cerknica — solid spots to resupply. But after that, it’s into the Notranjska region: bear territory, no resupply, no communication. The front pack will hit it at night, chanting bear-repellent mantras to themselves. The back pack will hopefully rest at CP1 or drop down into nearby towns — any beds before the wilderness are worth their weight in gold.

But it’s all up for grabs.

Women’s Race:
A phenomenal start from Zuzana Bohacova and Cristina Tamburini — both seasoned ultra riders. Zuzana is sitting in 6th overall. SIXTH! Cristina is just 10km behind — anything can happen.The women’s ultra scene is absolutely flying at the moment, breaking out of the shadows and becoming the main event. YEHAA!

Men’s Race:
Adam Jordan came out hot and is already at CP1. He’s followed by former Serpent Omar Martinello and the relentless Andre Siefert.

A mixed pair, Johannes Schlepper and Rhea Leweke, are leading the group — strong, steady, and clearly in sync.

As night calls in on our little Serpents, the race winds deeper into the wild heart of Slovenia. The sun may have dipped, but the tension is climbing — and so are the riders.

Up front, Adam Jordan continues his charge toward CP2, already 290km in, carving through the elevation like it’s flat. Behind him, a tight chase group sits just 40km adrift, threading through the forested dark in a race against both the clock and their own fatigue.

Now begins the quiet war:
Push on through the unknown, or seek out warmth and rest in some shadowed village?
No resupply. No signal. Just instincts, headlamps, and grit.

In the women’s field, Zuzana Bohacova is still riding strong, pushing determinedly toward CP2. Bianca Datola is chasing close behind, with Cristina Tamburini right on her wheel — a fierce contest unfolding in the dark.

In the pairs category, a tough blow — our early leaders Johannes Schlepper and Rhea Leweke have sadly become the first DNFs of the race. A difficult decision, no doubt, and a stark reminder of just how brutal the conditions are out there.

Stepping up, Louis Dufrane and Atom Mairesse are now leading the pairs field — calm and consistent as they move into the unknown, night air thick with silence and tension.

Meanwhile, the mid-pack has largely settled in Postojna and Cerknica — smart move. A great place to refuel, dry out, and maybe even wash off the day’s damage. It’s been a gruelling one: mud, climbing, shifting weather. For many, it’s a welcome pause. But a determined chunk is pushing on, headlights piercing the dark, driven by momentum, stubbornness, and whatever snacks they’ve managed to stash.

The Notranjska is waiting — dark, wild, and full of mystery.

The Serpents are quiet now, but the night?
The night is very much awake.


As the Sun goes down

It was a cold and wet night out there — the kind that soaks through every layer and tests your will as much as your legs. Still, as morning broke, riders could be seen smiling through the grit, hunting for food and warmth in any café open.

Tuesday has kicked off with a hit of sunshine — and, of course, rain. Classic. Conditions are expected to deteriorate as the day goes on, but for those following from the comfort of home, this is when dotwatching really gets good. Mud, mayhem, and momentum shifts — it's all in play.

To add some wild spice, there have been bear sightings, both on the road and lurking in the woods. It's not just the climbs keeping riders on edge — it's the wildlife too.

In true event fashion, roads around Checkpoint 1 have been mysteriously closed again — almost certainly due to military exercises. As in past editions, there are reports of gunfire echoing in the distance. Because what’s a long-distance bike race without a bit of live-fire ambiance?

But the real headline belongs to Adam Jordan, who delivered an absolutely monumental overnight effort on the island of Krk: 425 km in just 23 hours, now at 485km with barely 1.5 hours of rest. It’s a feat worthy of legend, but it’s also come at a cost. Adam’s body is showing signs of strain, and he's now unsure whether he can continue. We are behind you Adam!

Papa Serpent is on his way to check in, and all eyes are on whether Adam can catch the ferry to Cres — the next challenge catching the 10 p.m. Ferry back onto the mainland. Miss it, and the effort risks being washed away.Either way, some rest might not be the worst outcome for the battered front group.

Meanwhile, Omar has been dealt a tough hand. A smoking Wahoo (yes, literally) has forced him into third place, and thick, sticky peanut butter mud on Krk had him washing the bike in the sea just to keep moving. Not quite what you'd expect from a high-performance race setup — but it’s all part of the chaos.

The roads are rough, the weather’s a gamble, and the stakes are rising. It’s shaping up to be one of those days — the kind where stories are written in pedal strokes, and legends are born in the mud.


Daybreak, Drama, and Dotwatching Gold

It’s been edge-of-your-seat stuff out there. After an incredible effort, Adam Jordan's body finally hit its limit. He made the tough decision to stop at Checkpoint Krk — a gut-wrenching end to a heroic ride.

With Adam out, the race tightened dramatically. Omar Martinello was racing against the clock to catch the ferry — with just minutes to spare. For a while, it was unclear whether he’d made it. But then, the trackers pinged in the middle of the sea, confirming he was on board.

Meanwhile, Stefano Giangrossi, who had been leading, was calmly waiting for the ferry. After what felt like an eternity, both riders docked on Cres and set off for the long journey north. They seem neck and neck at current state of play, perhaps friendly chinwags  Now, Omar has edged slightly ahead, and with just three hours to cover 30 km to catch the next ferry, it’s going to be tight. Very tight.

Further back, the mid-pack riders are snaking their way out of the forests and toward Checkpoint 2. From there, they’ll be treated to a scenic descent to a reservoir — and yes, I’ll be dammed (pun very much intended), but that section is more brutal than it looks. With the wet conditions, it’s all slop, roots, and relentless sliding. Trust me — it just. won’t. stop.

To make matters worse, GPS systems are starting to fail, and trackers are reportedly being washed down storm drains. Add that to the list of 2025 edition chaos.

If things go to plan, I’m predicting the Serpents will be out of Slovenia by nightfall, rolling into the beauty (and challenge) of Croatia.

Elsewhere on the map, Andre Siefert has taken a puzzling detour down to Rijeka. Based on last year’s downgrade of "just a quick bite for me," I can say with confidence — that’s a beast of a climb back up. Most likely? A technical issue that needed more than what the route’s tiny villages could offer.

Meanwhile, keep your eyes on Zuzana Bohacova — she’s snaked her way up into fourth place, and no doubt she’s still smiling through it all, fully embracing the wild, wonderful adventure unfolding ahead.

But if there’s one thing clear from this year’s race, it’s this: these Serpents are relentless. They’re strong, focused, and grinding through some truly savage conditions. Despite everything — the cold, the mud, the technical issues — the DNF rate remains surprisingly low at 7. And that, more than anything, tells you the kind of grit this field has.

And Just Like That... A New Leader Emerges

This is where the race gets interesting.

It appears Omar Martinello and Stefano Giangrossi missed the last ferry — or perhaps it was cancelled altogether. Either way, the result is the same: an unexpected full night’s sleep for two very tired frontrunners. Not often you get that kind of luxury mid-race.

Over on the women’s side, things are heating up. We now have three women in the top 10 — and we love to see it.

Bianca Datola made a big move during the night, overtaking Zuzana Bohacova to lead the women’s race. But this is far from over — Zuzana is currently chasing hard to catch the first ferry, and she’s not one to back down.

Just behind, Cristiana Tamburini is only 25km off the front. She may miss the first ferry but should comfortably catch the second — a bit of enforced R&R that could actually work in her favour as the race drags on. 

Our lead pair — Louis Dufrane and Atom Mairesse — are only have a 20km lead. With the group compressing and ferry timetables to contend with, we’re looking at a possible full race reset. From here on, it’s anyone’s game.

It’s shaping up to be a dry Tuesday, a welcome break before midweek storms roll in. Today’s goal is simple: get the kilometres in while the weather plays nice.

Just before the Croatian border, a small gaggle of Serpents chose to rest up early — a smart move before what’s sure to be a demanding day. Further ahead, others pushed past Checkpoint 2, descending before nightfall. Most landed in Fužine, while a few opted for a classic bivy along the trail — cold, damp, and just committed enough.

Tuesday will be all about chasing ferries. Miss one, and it’s a 90-minute setback. Let’s hope the peanut butter mud has dried and that no more riders get zapped by those electric fences.

Meanwhile, over on Krk, the riders are taking on a landscape straight out of prehistory. Think rocks on rocks on rocks. And then there’s the infamous Vraska hike-a-bike — a brutal climb guaranteed to leave a mark. Catch Bruno and Marco over on @sevenserpents capturing the suffering — and smiles — from the trail.


A Pause at the Edge — and a Race Reset

Dare I say it? We could be looking at our first finisher tonight!

Omar Martinello, you are flying. 63km to go, so technically 43km to go..the last 20 km is downhill, so really, we deduct that from all mental and physical calculations.

This morning kicked off with a pack of seven riders docking on the mainland by 7 a.m. For a brief moment, Zuzana Bohacova led the field (and yes, she deserves that moment of glory), but since then it’s been Omar, Stefano Giangrossi, and Ondrej Sobek who have taken off like caffeinated rockets — no doubt fuelled by ferry espresso, jam Croissants and sheer willpower.These three are getting it done and I think while I'll be sleeping they will be quenching there thirst with that well deserved beer.

Now back on the mainland in Slovenia, things get steep — again.From Brestova, it’s a brutal 20 km climb. It begins with smooth road — a false sense of security — then veers into hike-a-bike gravel and ends with wide-open rocky terrain, where you are likely to get battered by wind. In the distance, you spot a lonely tower high above. And yes — Bruno is sending you up there. Again.

A word of warning to the uninitiated: if you look up and see a tower or something perched way up high, you can be fairly sure Bruno’s about to send you there. Cruel? Yes. Worth it? maybe — look at the pictures after it's finish... ah yes that's why!

Motovun is another one of those beautiful-but-brutal hilltop villages. We’ve entered truffle country, but when the hunger hits, the only delicacy riders can find are truffle crisps. Bruno, you really know how to treat your Serpents.

The front runners are already grinding their way toward the final gravel climb — and it’s no joke. It’s loose, long, exposed, and with bad weather rolling in later this week, this section could become a wait-it-out kind of situation.

Our Lead Pair are still holding tight with that 20km gap. Can they maintain it for another 311km?

Meanwhile, the mid-pack riders were up early, navigating a morning of detours and deliberation. The usual question: Food now or food later? The answer, of course, is always food now. Shoutout to the riders who formed a mini breakfast club in Kraljevica, bonding over lukewarm coffee and existential dread.

A cluster of riders tackled CP2 at first light and are on their way to Krk by sundown. Some will settle in for the night; others will try to squeeze in as many kilometres as possible before the storm rolls in.

Currently as of 19:00 Cres and Krk have officially been conquered by dots — quite the sight on the live tracker. It’s become a game of ferry-chasing or bed-hunting, with riders gambling between motion and much-needed rest.

And at the very back, two determined Serpents — Igor Karolewski and Reinhold Gross — continue to push forward with grit and heart. Gentlemen, we salute you. Your effort is no less heroic — perhaps even more so — than the fight at the front.

As for the race at large? A few more scratches added to the board today, bringing us up to 12 total DNFs — a reminder of how tough this terrain, and this challenge, truly is.

Flying Serpents, Food Dilemmas & Final Climbs

We have our first snake bite.

He's gone and done it - 4th times a charm — Omar Martinello is our King Cobra of the 2025 Seven Serpents! 
(Okay okay, that’s enough snake puns… maybe.)

With an impressive time of [62 hrs 54 mins], Omar rolled into Trieste just as the sun dipped below the horizon — and, in true Seven Serpents fashion, the skies opened. Rain, always on cue. He was greeted in the square by Bruno himself, marking the end of a huge effort with a wet, glorious finish.

Not far behind, Stefano Giangrossi is close to arriving to claim second place, 20km to go rounding off an incredible duel that’s played out across ferries, forests, and more rocks than any one route deserves.

Now, all eyes are on Ondrej Sobek, currently 50 km from the finish and poised to complete the men’s podium.

But the race isn’t over — not by a long shot.

The women’s podium is coming in hot, with Zuzana Bohacova and Bianca Datola neck and neck, just 3 km apart. They’re likely to finish 4th and 5th overall.. maybe 3rd?, which is not just remarkable — it’s legendary.

Who will be crowned Serpent Queen? That title is still up for grabs, and it may come down to who pushes just that little bit harder through the early hours.

Meanwhile, the rest of the field snakes onward — under stars, through rain, and with a mix of grit, fatigue, and stubborn joy.

Drum roll, please…

Zuzana Bohacova rolled into Trieste after 65 hours and 51 minutes of sheer determination, grit, and not a small amount of rain — claiming the women’s crown and 4th place overall in a stacked field of 100. What. A. Ride.

Right on her heels — just 13 minutes later — was Bianca Datola, who pushed hard all through the night in a gripping head-to-head battle that had us refreshing the tracker like maniacs. That’s your 2nd place woman, and 5th overall. Absolutely phenomenal riding from both.

A battle like this? It’s what makes Seven Serpents the beast it is. Hats off, helmets off, everything off (okay, not everything) — you’ve both made history on this route. 

Stefano Giangrossi landed a well-earned 2nd place overall and men’s runner-up, clocking in at 64 hours and 9 minutes — a time as sharp as his pacing through the hills.
Not long after, in the quiet hours of the night, Ondrej Sobek rolled into Trieste to secure 3rd place on the men’s podium, closing the chapter on a relentless three-way battle that spanned islands, thunderstorms, and ferry chases.

Today promises a mix of questionable weather and pure perseverance.

All remaining riders have now made it off the mainland and onto Krk, meaning the final stages are truly underway. Expect muddy bikes, tired legs, and — if the forecast is correct — a sky that can’t quite decide what mood it’s in.

Who will complete the top ten? Which serpents are making moves in the night, and who’s waiting for the weather to pass?

We’ll be watching the dots. The finish line awaits.

All Hail the Serpent Queen

Our Women’s Podium is Complete!

Cristiana Tamburini has crossed the finish line after 76 hours and 20 minutes of grit, determination, and zero drama — just pure, unshakable focus.
That lands her at 13th overall, which is absolutely massive.

That wraps up our women’s top three, and what a trio they’ve been — fast, fearless, and relentless. Bravo to all!

We now have 20 bleary-eyed serpents curled up in corners of Trieste catching some much-needed rest.
We’re predicting at least 6 more finishers today, but who’s counting? (We are. Obsessively.)

Meanwhile, at the front…
Our lead duo — Loui Dufrane and Atom Mairesse — are inching ever closer to Trieste. Quiet, steady, snake-like. Expect big things soon from the pair who’ve been glued together for days. Tracker issues or perhaps Louis leads ahead by 40km to get a bed for the night? as there is slight seperation for this lead duo.

We had sunshine this morning. We might still have it. Honestly, it’s become a weather roulette — one moment warm rays, the next: soaked socks and swearing.
And according to the forecast, we’re dancing this dance all the way through to Saturday. Good luck out there.

The main cluster of riders is now grinding through the 20 km climb post-ferry — a soul-sapping effort made marginally better by the promise of a proper meal in Novigrad.
It’s the perfect spot to resupply, recharge, and re-evaluate life choices before the final push.

But don’t be fooled — from ferry to finish, there’s still 300 km to go. And plenty of up, up, ups and truffles, let's not forget those truffles.

Our lanterne rouge, Igor Karolewski, is still bravely tackling the rocky climbs of Krk, while Viev Polehnak boards the ferry to Cres, staring down the next challenge with quiet resolve.
