Welcome to the race commentary. I have only recently taken on this role and will be diving deep into the participants list and this year's route tomorrow morning.

The little serpents will start tomorrow morning at 7am, 520 km and 10,000 metres of climbing are waiting. According to the race map, there are 155 solo riders and 18 pairs.

My name is Sandra, I rode the first edition of the Seven Serpents Quick Bite in 2023. And now I am super excited to be dotwatching the 2025 edition and commenting on the race.

Welcome to 2025th edition of the Seven Serpents Quick Bite

The first 14 hours of the Seven Serpents Quick Bite 2025 are over. For the front pack the challenge was to make it to the last ferry of the day. If I read the schedule correctly, it will leave at 23:59 from Krk, the first island, to Cres, the second island of the race. 

I have to confess that I am not good in reading the ferry schedule. During my Seven Serpents Quick Bite I missed one of the ferries even thought I was there perfectly in time because I missread the schedule. So I had to wait for one hour.

Comparing this years race leaders with last years leader Omar, the race to the last ferry literally will be a race. Omar crossed the bridge to Krk last year 45 minutes earlier than the first riders this year. Will they make it to the last ferry of the day?

The first female rider is Anna Kofler from Austria, she reached the second Checkpoint on position 4. Some of you might know her. She rode Badlands last year and finished on 15th position overall in 2 days 9 hours and 11 minutes. According to procyclingstats.com, in 2023 and 2024 she won the Bronze medal of the National Championships Austria in Individual Time Trial discipline. Further back on the map, some riders took nice and long lunch breaks and probably enjoyed refueling at its best. Speaking of food, I just saw an insta-story of Matthew Falconer, who rides as a pair (164A). He had some pasta mixed with fries for dinner. Yummy.

Most of the riders have passed CP1, I remember the last few metres up that hill like it was yesterday. And I remember some highlights like the Predjama Castle, the lake Cerkniško jezero, the Castle Sneznik.

As the sun goes down, some riders already have booked accommodations. Some have found a campsite to stay. A good decision because you will see everything of the beautiful route. As nice as riding through the night can be, you will miss seeing much even thought this night might be brighted by the almost full moon. I rode seven serpents in 2022 and seven serpents quick bite in 2023 I hardly saw anything of the national park as it was dark both times.

The first 14 hours

Good morning!

let's start at the front of the field. Four riders made it to the 23:59 ferry.

Watching the replay of the race, it seems that Anna and Paul decided to have a little rest right after the first ferry, while Nils and Johannes continued to the second ferry. In the morning they all met again to leave the island. Now it seems that Anna is taking a little break and probably having breakfast in Moscenicka Draga, one village on the coast before the steep climb up to the third checkpoint.

Yesterday evening I received a message which made me smile. Solo rider Luis Rey Sanchez (cap 122) sent me a picture of his brief conversation with ChatGPT.

Every year some people are seeing bears during Seven Serpents and Seven Serpents Quick bite, so it definitly can be the shit of a brown bear.

Many riders are back on the road again, some are having breakfast and starting in day two. I hope that I will receive some interesting stories of some of the riders during the day for my evening update.

What kind of shit is this?

One link I want to share is the bikes of the Seven Serpents Quick Bite 2025. It is always interesting to scroll through all the setups. You might get inspired by some. But before an unsupported bikepacking event starts it can make you, as a participant, question all of your choices because you see people carrying almost nothing. Have I packed too much? Have I packed too little? Should I unpack this or that? I did not think about this, should I buy it last minute?

While writing this, another message drops in - by Marco Ricci (cap 103), who unfortunately joins the DNF list. His navigation device doesn't respond anymore. Not even turning it off by pressing the on/off button for looong works.

But luckily he doesn't feel too bad even thought his stem tells him "DNF is not an option" and tries to catch up with the first riders at the finish line.

Bikes of the event

The first and the first riders are Joe Ambrosch (Cap 5) and Paul Zamecek (Cap 152), in the bikes of... article, he calls himself Paul Botenmaus. Both finished together, so we have two firsts :)

About 15 minutes later the third rider and the first women (cap 59) reached the finish line in Trieste: Anna Kofler. What a ride! Amazing!

This morning I wrote a check-in message to Patrizia Helene Schöder (cap 117), who stayed on a campsite last night. Together with 3 other riders she had breakfast next to the campsite and wrote that the night was okay, since it was not too cold. Her goal for today was to reach the bridge. With some pretty rough gravel ahead, I am sure she can make it.

After a sunny morning, a strong wind came up. We already know from the last years, that wind can lead to closing the bridge to Krk and that ferrys won't go. So fingers crossed that the riders can continue and that the wind will die down.

First Finishers have arrived early afternoon

Now, exactly two days in the event, already 38 solo riders have reached the finish line. Lisa Winkler (cap 148) finished 5 hours ago on 31st position over all and if I see read the names right, she is the second women reaching Trieste.

The first pair seems to be split up and one of them only has to go for about 30 km.

But now to my story from yesterday, Patrizia Helene Schöder reached her goal and spend the night just before the bridge in Kraljevica.

Yesterday evening I received a rollercoaster story of Janek Sauer, Cap 110. Janek is joining an unsupported bikepacking event for the first time of his life. The first day was like planned but then it began. As he crossed the croatian border, the rough gravel began. But let me cite his words:
> Yesterday was a great day for me as a first-timer — everything went exactly as planned. However, I struggled a bit today. The terrain in Croatia was much more challenging than I am used to in northern Germany. Just before the thunderstorm on the mountain, I found a high seat which I used as a shelter. Then, 2 km later, there was a loud rattling noise from the rack. I had lost the fastening on one side, so I couldn't continue riding. Firstly, I provisionally reattached the pannier rack, and then I was thinking aboutleaving only the most essential things in the saddlebag and send the rest home by post. However, this was not an option. So, I went down to Meja, where I found an upgrade to the temporary rack attachment in a car workshop, and then I struggled back up the mountain. Frustrated, I briefly considered staying at a guesthouse at the garage at 18:30, but I carried on in the end. I didn't get as far as I'd hoped, but I'm absolutely delighted to have made it to Krk in time for sunset.

I did not hear anything about the wind and the bridge and the ferries anymore, I guess the wind has calmed down.

There is one dot which I will clarify. All the other dots have reached the demanding croatian gravel.

Situation after 48 hours

This morning, the first pair reached the finish line! The tracking probably was wrong, both finished together.
In this most rescent Instagram post, you see a happy Lisa Winkler finishing this night as I mentioned before. A bit later the 3rd female rider reached Trieste: Giulia Balbinot. Photos of them and the first pair in this Instagram post:

Katharina Gotterbarm, Cap 41, sent me a voice message about her morning. She was frustrated because she knew the ferry schedule and she knew when to start the day to catch the 9:15 ferry to Cres. Somehow she found out that when she changes the fitness level in the komoot app, her fitness level as well changes and so she managed to hop on the ferry. But she first forgot to buy the ticket.
Thats not all, she was looking forward to eat her leftover pizza. But when opening the cardboard box, she realized, the pizza has gone. She must have lost it somewhere on the rough gravel sections. The motorcyclists felt sorry for her and gave her some oat bars and other sweet snacks. 

I managed to find out what happened to the dot of Sabrina Rieklink. First the tracker did not work and then she had to scratch for some reason.

First pair finished this morning

This evening, Bruno, papa Serpents, re-opened the group chat again to cheer the riders who are still on track. Two hands of people are on the last 20 kilometers of the track. Some will probably finish during the night and others are staying just before the climb to Checkpoint 3 for the night.

By the way, this is a huge benefit of not finishing as one of the first riders: there is a bunge of people cheering on you and welcoming you at the finish, celebrating with you. I always love to celebrate every single finisher. And so do others.

Group chat is open again to cheer the riders

I checked in with Jo Ris (Cap 105) yesterday and got an answer which makes me smile. I just asked how it is going and got this: 
> It's incredibly beautiful and great fun, even if the legs do hurt. Today, we're going to Cres and we will stop for a dip to the sea!

In this very moment, a little group of about 6 people is on the ferry to Cres. I am curious if they will find a place to swim.

If someone is wondering, why Francis Steenlink is between Krk and Cres for 2 days already. He is not, the tracker just seems to be too exhausted from this ride. There were some jokes about rowing and a water bike in the group chat while Francis enjoyed the 7th pizza within 3 days. 


Enjoing with hurting legs

The last riders will finish soon. They have crossed the 500 km mark. They will finish perfectly in time to join dinner this evening, will they join?! I guess if they join, they first will have a shower and change clothes. But who knows :)

What an event! Even thought the Quick Bite is less rough than Seven Serpents, it is chellenging. According to a poll in the Group Chat, 81 people had one single puncture during the event, 14 had multiple punctures, two riders had a broken chain, 6 had broken bags, 12 had other issues which they could fix themselfs, 7 had issues and needed help to fix it... And the broken Garmin.

This year, the weather was with the riders. Lets see what it will be at Seven Serpents, which will start in a few days.

Congratulations to all the finishers, also congratulations to all the DNFs to have registered and tried, congratulations to make the decision to not finish. I know it is not an easy one. Congratulations for fixing mechanicals, congratulations for being part of this.
