The 2019 Trans Am Bike Race begins on 2nd June, and will see 77 riders tackle the 4,200-mile Trans America bike trail end-to-end in the quickest time possible. As we near the starting klaxon for the sixth edition of the event, we’d like to introduce you to the race, a selection of this year’s riders, and some top tips for watching the action unfold as participants attempt to ride across America. 


__THE ROUTE__

Since its inception in 2014, the Trans Am has followed the TransAmerica Trail – a continent-crossing bike path first launched in 1976 to celebrate the country’s 200th birthday. Passing through some of America’s most famous landmarks and regions, including Yellowstone National Park and the Cascade Mountains, the trail showcases the varied landscapes found in this vast country, and will take riders through a range of climates along the way. The trail also benefits from its long history, with many of the restaurants and cafes along the way offering a warm welcome to passing cyclists.

But wait! At a T-junction somewhere in Wyoming, riders will have the choice to turn left and venture through Nebraska along the Mormon Katy Trail or continue right along the classic route into the mountains of Colorado. It'll be interested to see which route riders take and whether there is an obvious advantage to either.

But despite the event's long history and largely familiar route, racing the TABR is still an almighty undertaking: there are no checkpoints, required stopping points, or cut-off times – you simply have to make it to the end.


__THE RIDERS__

Participants in this year’s race are already gathering at the departure point in Astoria, with some even heading out for warm up rides to settle the nerves and wake up the legs. Australian rookie Damian van Loon posted this update to Facebook yesterday:

Among the riders there is Trans Am veteran Matthijs Ligt. An experienced long-distance racer who has competed in the Transcontinental and the Indian Pacific Wheel Race, Matthijs’ knowledge will go a long way towards his potential success this year. He also finished 7th in this year’s BikingMan Oman event:

Six females grace the start sheet of this year’s TABR, and of those, just two hail from outside of the US – Amy Williams and Lea Meszarosova – both from London. Amy is a veteran of the race, having had her bike stolen only three days in to the 2016 edition. Unshaken, a crowdfunding effort by family and friends saw her purchase a new bike to complete the course.  

As with previous editions, the race is open to any kind of bike. This caused controversy last year with the participation of ‘velomobiles’ – recumbent bikes that feature a wind-cheating shell body – but this year, it appears the only out of the ordinary rigs to expect will be tandems.

Riders in the 2019 Trans Am have left the starting line in Astoria, and are now beginning their non-stop journey across the country. Favourites Matthijs Ligt and Omar Di Felice have already made their intentions clear – occupying two of the front three positions alongside Californian Chris O keefe after just 1 hour of racing.

This year's race could be dominated by the weather, with floods and road closures plaguing many sections of the route. McKenzie Pass – an iconic section the leaders hope to clear on the first night – is still partially closed due to snow and repair works after fire damage last year, forcing a 17-mile diversion.

With a fast start and race favourites already gathering at the front, the first 24 hours could be critical. How many riders will get through snowbound McKenzie Pass on day 1? Keep watching the dots. 

The first full day and night is complete, and already, different tactics are starting to emerge at the front of the race.

Current race leader Abdullah Zeinab is presumed resting after a four-hour plus break in tracker activity. He’s ridden more than 370 miles [(600+km)](https://www.strava.com/activities/2419694053?fbclid=IwAR3RMmOgyl2aTwxF7HA_KYyIkxE9qU9VAzzeoYNxWNryFKXi79OpxkNs3Sw) and appears to be following his usual tactic of riding hard and sleeping well in a bed – just as was his approach in last year’s unofficial Indian Pacific Wheel Race. Omar Di Felice stopped for a rest after 14 hours of hard riding, clocking up 270 miles at an astonishingly quick average speed of 19.3 mph. And rounding out the top three is Italian Maximiliano Oliva who’s currently at the 342-mile mark.

In the women’s race, Lea Meszarosova is leading the field at 281 miles, and a strong 40-mile gap seperates her and closest competitor Jennifer Ziel – a 22-year-old American from Boston.

We’re 48 hours in, and front runner Abdullah Zeinab has just passed the 700 mile mark. More than 125 miles ahead of his closest rivals, he’s set a blistering pace that appears too much to match. But with a rest stop of just six hours in the bank, can he sustain it? There’s more than 3,400 miles before Yorktown, and a continent’s worth of racing in between.

In the women’s field, Lea Meszarosova is still leading the pack at 504 miles with Jennifer Ziel now 80 miles back, currently riding the long incline of Ochoco Highway.

Abdullah’s lead continues into day three. He’s approaching the 1,000-mile mark as he climbs towards the town of Hamilton, Montana, and has extended his gap to more than 150 miles ahead of Michal Wiecki and Todd Carpenter.

Early yesterday, dot watcher and race chaser Reyna Phil flagged down Abdullah for a quick chat, capturing this great photo of him in full hi-vis mode and remaining on the route to offer snacks and water to other passing riders (although she had to wait some time to see another racer):

Further back, it’s all bunching up, with female leader Lea Meszarosova climbing through the main field to reach 14th position on the road. Jennifer Ziel too has advanced through the pack, 40 miles behind and chasing hard.

On my way to Baker City, I got a puncture and then when swapping it out realised I had a slashed tyre as well, so I put on my spare! There’s been some shuffling of places further down the pack, with 30-year-old Peter Jackson climbing from sixth place, to second, and now settling in the top five.

Five days on the road and there’s no apparent let up in Abdullah’s lead. He had his first major rest yesterday, clocking up around seven hours off the bike. His closest competitor, 59-year-old Keith Morical, doesn’t appear to have stopped for some time (roughly 24 hours), so his gap will likely increase as the day goes on and Keith is forced to break.

As Abdullah advances into Wyoming (more than 100 miles in and currently the only rider in the state), he gets closer to this year’s alternate route option. It’s either a left turn towards Nebraska – cutting out Colorado and Kansas – or continue straight towards the Rocky Mountains. We have our suspicions which way he’ll head, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Further down the pack, Britt Barcroft is experiencing the first signs of every ultra cyclist’s worst nightmare – knee pain. Valuing the ride itself over blindly pushing through, she’s taking some time to rest up before getting back on the bike. Best wishes Britt!

I had some knee pain when I first got on the bike, so we went to safeway to swap out my knee tape for a stronger brace. But as we pedaled out of town my gut told me to stop. Another strong Seattle rider just scratched due to knee issues and I&#39;m a bit shook. I&#39;m not willing to go home and I don&#39;t want to dig myself into a place that I can&#39;t get out of. I&#39;m not experienced as an ultracyclist so I don&#39;t know how much knee pain I can deal with before turning it into a serious problem, but I do know this is one of the most common reasons people scratch. Hoping that a day or two of icing will rehab it enough to get back out there. Obviously we&#39;ve proven we are capable of some huge days, so maybe we can catch up a bit later on? Bad weather has put a stop to many riders’ progress today, with a number of the top ten (Omar Di Felice, Todd Carpenter, Peter Jackson) opting to hide out in West Yellowstone. Abdullah’s lead now stands at 300 miles. That’s at least one full day’s riding at pace for any of the other top racers, and at such an early stage in the event, it’s looking like first place might already be spoken for.

Further down the field, devoted dot watcher and certified trail angel Reyna Phil is still supporting riders as they pass through Idaho. She’s even opened her home to those in need of a hot shower and somewhere to dry their clothes:

Just when you think you’ve seen Abdullah at the peak of his strength, he goes and surprises you: yesterday the Australian superman rode for nearly 27 hours straight, stopping for just six hours in Silverthorne early this morning. He’s now back on the road and within reach of Marcel Graber’s record time to Hoosier Pass set last year. When you consider Marcel set that time on a recumbent bike covered in a highly aerodynamic shell, you start to realise just how strong Abdullah’s ride is. Once over the pass, which he will be in roughly 4 miles, that’s the worst of the bunched-up climbing done. Then it’s (mostly) flat until the rolling hills of Kentucky and Virginia – giving Abdullah ample chance to show off his time-trialing skills. 

He’s past half way. Abdullah Zeinab has stopped in Eads for a rest at the 2,130 mile mark. He put in another 20+ hour ride yesterday, accruing more than 170 miles in the last nine hours. Let’s see how long this nap lasts…

Leading lady Lea Meszarosova continues to threaten the top ten – trading places with Tom Wick throughout the night and into this morning. The pair are currently passing through the town of Rawlins, at a distance so small their dots are completely overlapped.

On the next climb I bumped into the female rider ‘Wild Birdie’ who is currently coming 3rd in her category. Also met quite a few other ‘non race’ riders who are just touring the Trans Am Trail and swapped some adventure stories! I always enjoy these types of interactions and like to make the time for conversation as much as possible! Apart from that, I decided to stay in the town of West Yellowstone tonight, so I could make the most of my time in the Yellowstone National Park tomorrow, as I’m unlikely to ever get the chance to visit this region again in the future. The main issue I’m finding at the moment with my race, is just getting used to the high mountain altitude. We are currently around 2000m above sea level, I live next to the beach back home in Perth, Western Australia. It always feel that I’m running out of air, especially on the bigger climbs. It is affecting my normal power output somewhat.
