Well, kind of. The first wave of riders have now departed from Dublin to Derry – or checkpoint 1 – where the official route kicks in and must be followed from here on out. It’s a race within a race, as whoever makes it to Derry first will no doubt gain themselves a big advantage.

The notorious Irish weather is looking rather calm and innocuous today, with a light breeze and very low chance of rain. This bodes well for the journey to Derry, as nobody wants to battle a storm at the same time as route-finding. Here’s the forecast courtesy of [Epic Ride Weather](https://www.epicrideweather.com/):

Riders must also remember the three in 24 rule – meaning they must rest for three hours out of every 24, apart from on two days of their choosing that can’t be back to back. It’s event organiser Adrian O’Sullivan’s attempt at preventing dangerous rider fatigue, and should make for some interesting tactical choices as the days start to add up.

One full day and night in, and almost all riders are through checkpoint 1 and onto the main route.

At the sharp end, a pack of five riders have distanced themselves from the main bunch, currently making their way towards the small village of Crolly. Londoner Rob Webb leads the way, closely followed by German rider Martin Haubold. 

Fifty-year-old Lee Killestein captured this beautiful shot somewhere near Malin Head in Carndonagh this morning, as the track makes its way across the most northerly points of Ireland:

Race organisers reported last night that Rob Webb has been forced to scratch from this year’s event following a collision with a car. He’s unharmed, but his bike wasn’t so fortunate. 

It’s always traumatic to hear of any rider being involved in an incident like this, but for a competitor at the front of the field, the effects must be even more difficult to deal with. Congratulations on a strong ride Rob, and we hope to see you on the road again soon. 

Following Rob Webb’s scratch last night, Dan Harty now leads the way with a gap of around 25km between him and closest rider Matt Seward.

Dan is now just 75km from the finish in Kinsale, followed by Matt Seward at a distance of 25km. It’s a big gap to close, but if Matt continues at his current pace, it could be a close finish:

A couple of hundred kilometres further back, Ede Harrison holds on to the top spot in the women’s category as she makes her way round Castletownbere – a comfortable 66km ahead of second place female Anisa Aubin.
