__Welcome to the 7th edition of the TransIbérica non-stop road cycling race across the Iberian Peninsula.__

In it's seventh year, the TransIbérica has continued to grow and this year boasts the biggest challenge to date, with the most international route it has ever hosted. The rules, simplified:

NON-STOP
Time only stops when the rider crosses the finish line.

NO ROUTE
There is no official route, just __10 mandatory checkpoints__, so riders must organize their own route considering the orography, locations, weather, traditions and making some strategic decisions, as the shorter way is rarely the quickest way.

NO SUPPORT
Any sort of support is prohibited, although unexpected help en-route is allowed.

Over to the Transibérica team for some more details on the race:

START: BOLZANO - STELVIO 
The route for the seventh edition of Transibérica will be the most international to date. To kick off this unforgettable adventure, we have selected the town of Bolzano as our starting point. The start will include a parcours of 150 km from the headquarters of Q36.5 in Bolzano until the top of “Passo Stelvio”.

At 2.758 meters, the “Passo dello Stelvio” is the highest paved pass in Italy. A mountain that has to be on the bucket list of every cyclist. Prato allo Stelvio marks the starting point of the most famous Stelvio side, the one Transiberica riders will have to tackle.

The first kilometers (14,6kms) are quite easy and neutralised by a BikeLine. The timing will start running 1 kilometer after taking the cross to the climb of Paso Mendola (km 16,2 of the Parcourse).

After Paso Mendola the route continues by Passo Padale on the way to Merano and Passo Stelvio. In Merano the road gradually ascends through the trees via Ponte di Stelvio and Stelvio, the village after which the climb was named. After crossing the bridge over the Rio Trafoi, it becomes more difficult. You have just one kilometer with a gradient below 7% to catch your breath. The remaining 17 kilometers are all above 7%.

BOLZANO 24/08/2024 2024 EDITION
The climb gets steeper and steeper, but still hasn't shown its true face. After 15 kilometers of ascent, you reach another milestone; the restaurant Rocca Bianca. You are at approximately 1861 meters above sea level, more or less on top of Mont Ventoux (our CP2). The Stelvio has yet to begin. Despite the many hairpin bends, you still haven't reached the typical hairpin section with the stone walls. But that’s about to change. The climb now hits its steepest section as the view opens up. A stone wall on the right announces the last part. A bit further you suddenly see the top of the pass right in front of you, behind the Hotel Franzenhöhe. You have reached Tornante 24. There are still 23 hairpin bends and over 600 meters of elevation to conquer. It's a long journey to the summit, but rest assured the stunning views and surroundings will inspire you to get the best out of yourself.

CP#1 FURKA PASS (2.429M) 

The Furka Pass is one of the most imposing Alpine crossings at 2.436m above sea level and is known for its scenic views of the surrounding mountains, including the Matterhorn and the Rhone Glacier. Starting from Realp, the Passo della Furka ascent is 12.3 km long. Over this distance, you will climb 893 meters at an average gradient of 7.3%.

The Furka Pass has a rich history and has been an important transportation route for centuries. It was first used by the Romans as a trade route and was later used by medieval traders and pilgrims traveling to and from Italy.

On the way to the top of the pass, you will even get the chance to see the Furka steam train, puffing along on its historic journey. Nowadays, the climb is on beautiful tarmac, like most climbs in Switzerland. The first five kilometers are immediately quite steep uphill. Then it gets easier until about three kilometers before the summit. Shortly before the summit, the famous S-curve awaits. Then it's straight on towards the summit and the restaurant Furkablick that, as the name suggests, gives you a view of the beautiful Furpakass from the terrace.

Down hilling you will get the most iconic views of the climb and the famous Belvedere Hotel. It is probably the most iconic mountain pass accommodation in the world. In 1882, Josef Seiler, a member of a Valais hotel family, built it on an important hairpin bend of the new Furka Pass road, thus achieving the best panoramic views of the Valais and Bernese Alps and, above all, the surrounding area of the Rhône glacier, the main attraction of the Hotel.

The Belvedere Hotel, once a Belle Époque gem near the Rhône Glacier, flourished in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, hosting up to 90 guests at its peak. However, the advent of new transportation in the 1920s made Alpine crossings faster, reducing the need for mountain pass hotels like the Belvedere. With the glacier's retreat diminishing its appeal, the hotel was abandoned and put up for sale in 2015. Despite this, it remains an iconic photographic subject, immortalised in postcards, social media, and even the 1965 James Bond film featuring Sean Connery’s Aston Martin.

CP#2 MONT VENTOUX (1.909M)
Mont Ventoux is one of the most famous mountains in cycling. It is a magnet for cyclists from all over the world who want to challenge themselves on the mountain’s iconic slopes. From Bédoin there is more than 1600m of positive elevation gain above 7,5% average, and the last 5km are more exposed and weather dependent. This section has the reputation of being very windy. However it works both ways and quite often a nice tail wind will help you to the top. If you are unlucky you will be battling into the wind all the way to the top and it will feel like 12% again.

As you leave “Chalet Reynard" you have a short steep section but as you round the first bend there is a noticeable drop in gradient with an average of approximately 7% for the next 4.5km. The last section from the Simpson Memorial is steep again at 10% but by this time you won’t really care because glory is in sight. The Ventoux climb must be done via different sides for going up and coming down.

CP#3 MONT AIGOUAL (1.567M)
The #CP3 is part of the Massif Central, and it is located within the Cévennes National Park. Mont Aigoual, is a significant location immortalized in Tim Krabbé's 1978 semi-autobiographical novel, "The Rider." In this book, Krabbé begins his narrative at the start of the Tour de Mont Aigoual, poised to challenge his rivals in the rugged mountains of Central France. "The Rider" eloquently captures the essence of cycling, exploring into the physical and psychological challenges faced by cyclists—truths that connect with the experience awaiting the Transiberica riders. As they climb Mont Aigoual, they will encounter not just the demanding terrain but also the profound reflections on life and endurance that Krabbé illustrates so clearly.

As the Mont Ventoux, Mont Aigoual must be done via different sides for going up and coming down. It's worth mentioning that on clear days, you can see the Mediterranean Sea, the Pyrenees, and even the Alps, including Mont Blanc.

CP#4 CARCASSONNE 
Carcassonne is a French fortified town in the department of Aude, region of Occitania. Considered to be the largest and best conserved medieval fortress in Europe, riders will have to pedal through the city, tackling a 1.5 km course around the famous Murs of Carcassonne. This parcourse includes a section of cobblestone road, adding an extra bit of challenge to your journey.

CP#5 LLUIS COMPANYS MONUMENT
At Collado Manrella, riders will cross the border into Spain. Included in the 2024 “Transpyrenees” route, this mountain pass was one of the key places in the Republican retreat of 1939. At the top of the climb
there is a Monument to Lluís Companys, in commemoration of the place where president Companys and thousands of refugees went into exile in 1939. Riders will have to tackle 2 kilometers of light gravel road before they reach the summit and cross the border into Spain.

CP#6 SANTUARI MARE DE DÉU DEL MONT (1.090M) 
Mare de Del del Mont is one of Girona's classic climbs, stretching 18.5km with an average grade of 5%. The final 6km ramps up with gradients ranging from (7%-10%) to reach the top. The bottom slopes are surrounded by woodland so there is nothing much to look at but your own stem or whoever happens to be in front. As you gain elevation, however, the trees give way to some of the most stunning views around which coincides nicely with the most painful part of the climb so you can concentrate on picking out where you just climbed from instead of your burning legs.

As we mentioned, one of the highlights of climbing Mare de Déu del Mont is the spectacular scenery from the very top of its 1,090m summit which include panoramic vistas of the surrounding area including the Pyrenees, Banyoles Lake and, on a clear day, the Costa Brava coastline. It’s worth adding that, the descent should be treated with great respect and care as the roads are narrow, steep, twisty and there may be oncoming traffic.

CP#7 TURÓ DE L’HOME (1654M)
The Turó de l'Home is the highest mountain in the Montseny Natural Park. It is 25.3km long and bridges 1495 vertical meters of elevation gain. The top of the ascent is located at 1654 meters above sea level, with an average gradient of 6%. It’s the Catalan version of Mont Ventoux!

CP#8 CANELLES DAM 
Canelles dam is the second checkpoint of the route that isn't located at the top of a climb. The dam reached a record height in the 60s and is currently the third largest Spanish dam. It is 151 m high above foundations, 210 m long at the top and stores a reservoir volume of 678 hm3. The dam stands at the border between Aragon and Catalonia.

CP#9 CRUZ DE LA DEMANDA (1856M) 
Alto de Cruz de la Demanda is a tribute to the territory of our gravel event, “Basajaun”. Participants will have the opportunity to discover this spectacular and remote area. Located in the region of La Rioja, the top of the ascent is situated at 1.856 meters above sea level. The climb is 15km long and bridges 899 vertical meters with an average gradient of 5.6%.

CP#10 ORBANEJA DEL CASTILLO 
This year, the final CP is once again a parcourse heading north through the Province of Burgos. Starting in the village of - Sargentes de la Lora - the one and the only oil well in Spain, which caused a sensation in the 60s and was extracting oil until 2017 after many years of decline (Ayoluengo and Valdeajos are the two oil fields that have existed in Spain), and finishing in the natural cave of Ermita de San Bernabé sculpted at the entrance of The Ojo Guareña Caves.

The caves with more than 100 km. of underground galleries form the largest karst complex in Spain and one of the largest caves in Europe. A weird mixture of scenarios, between fields, oil wells, the canyon of Ebro river, and some of the most beautiful villages as Orbaneja del Castillo or Puentedey to ended up at Ojo Guareña, cave and hermitages at ones.

The church is at the same time one of the main entrances to this complex of galleries, and its walls are covered with frescoes from the 18th century. We highly recommended to stop for a quick break and see the hermitage inside.

FINISH: BILBAO
Riders will complete their journey under the Euskalduna Bridge at Itsas Museum.

TransIbérica 2024 Race Preview

TransIbérica 2024 Tracking + Commentary: A free-route race starting in Bolzano, Italy for the first time, and finishing in the race's home of the Atlantic coastal city of Bilbao. Riders are required to tick off the 10 checkpoints and parcours across the Iberian Peninsula.
