Transibérica 2025 began on August 19th at 6:00 am with 202 riders: 168 solos and 17 pairs. Even before departure, the race had its share of drama with a few DNS: one rider delayed by a transport company, another whose bike was lost in transit, and one waiting for a mobile shop to open after breaking their phone.

CAP 106 Michal Sherman started as planned, but only a few kilometers into his journey his frame cracked at the seatstay. Undeterred, he spent hours searching for a fix or even a replacement bike, and somehow managed to reach Checkpoint 1. you gotta love the resilience riders are showing. The rest of the riders rolled out smoothly into the mountains.

Day one wasted no time. Within the opening kilometers riders were already tackling the legendary Gavia Pass. The morning was clear, but soon the heat set in. CAP 55 Greg led the charge, chased by CAP 94 Marco and CAP 104 Michael. In the women’s race, CAP 2 Ada crested first, followed by CAP 156 Sherry and CAP 121 Nora.

Some pushed hard from the start and paid for it quickly, while others found their rhythm, conserving energy and moving steadily up the field toward Checkpoint 1.

Beyond CP1, a new challenge emerged: a landslide closure on the road to Bormio, blocking the way to CP2 at the Splügen Pass. Official sources suggested it would reopen at noon on the 19th, but the situation remained uncertain. Riders debated options, some plotted alternatives, others improvised gravel detours (CAP 23 Bruno and CAP 92 Malte among them), while a few doubled back, descending the same side of Gavia at the cost of several hours. The last group gambled, hoping the road would be open, and when it wasn’t, some pushed through regardless.

We checked ourselves: the closure was real, applying equally to cars, cyclists, and pedestrians. As always, we reminded riders of the importance of obeying local traffic laws.

Then came the rain. Some Garmins and GPS units faltered, and riders carried the storm’s marks on their skin. With more storms forecast for Day 2, Gavia may yet turn nastier, narrow roads, heavy August traffic, riders could only hang on to the views od the misty mountians around for some comfort eventhough sheets of rain made the climb a punishing experience for the later groups.

Checkpoint 1 is now behind. Ahead lies the Splügen, with its 48 tornanti twisting into the clouds.

TransIbérica 2025: A free-route race starting in Bolzano, Italy for the first time, and finishing in the race's home of the Atlantic coastal city of Bilbao. Riders are required to tick off the 10 checkpoints and parcours across the Iberian Peninsula.
