Just after middningt the last rider reach Smygehuk.Tiago rolled in att 00.06 after an for him unusuall long day in the saddle. During the afternoon Hilda reached the finish line aswell. Congratulations to both of you!

This means all the riders have reached Smygehuk and the race is over. It's been fun watching the dots struggeling from Kiruna all the way to Smygehuk. What a journey, travering Sweden, this has been. I'm pretty sure this race will live in the memories of the racers for a long time and when they look back theyr'e going to be impressed by them selfs and what they have accomlished and how they've all delt with the hardships thrown at them.

Done and dusted

The report continues on the same positive note, with more finishers! 

Johan (4th on the long solo race) crossed the finish line around 2:30am, followed closely by Amanda & Dennis (3rd short pair) around 3:45 am. I am sure they are well tucked in bed now and will enjoy their first morning in Smygehuk without having to worry about riding! They can take care of themselves and their gear and enjoy the after-race party tonight!

All our attention and cheering now go to Tiago, the very brave Lanterne Rouge. He has about 200k to go, nothing to worry too much since he is now riding the short race which has a cut-off time of 12 days, and it’s also not impossible that he had kept enough energy to power through the last 200k to arrive tonight… let’s see what he does!

We wish him the most eventless ride, especially after hearing stories of the Team Skoda riders getting a puncture literally 100m away from the finish!  We also hope some riders will stick around to give him the finish line and party that he deserves when he arrives!


Day 11, Lanterne Rouge

Tonight we're glad to welcome a hole bunch of riders to the finish line, all of them riding in pairs. At 13.52 Amir and Mattias arrived and then Marie and Andreas joined them at 14.25. Later, at 19.30, Philip and Oscar arrived Congratulations to you all! Bet it's going to be great waking up tomorrow not having to get up on the bike and go for a pizza.

We still have a few riders out on the course and I'm sure they're looking forward to wraping this up. If nothing extraordarnary happens they should all reach Smygehuk by tomorrow evening. 

We (they) are all the winners

What a surprise to wake up this morning and see that we do not have any new finisher name to announce! The news of Niclas’s scratch comes as a shock, and it shows how hard this race has been for everyone. While we would hope that it gets easier as the riders get closer, they also have to battle tricky trails, bad weather, fatigue….

But, today will be a good day! Team Skoda (Andreas & Marie, Amir & Mattias) are still together, making good progress, and with 167k to go we can predict to see them cross the finish line tonight. Philip & Oscar have 200k to go and are already moving after starting around 5am this morning, which probably means they will also arrive tonight! Our dotwatchers nervousness will soon turn into relief as the riders arrive one by one (or two by two). 

Amanda & Dennis have 291k to go, which makes me think they will probably rest tonight and finish tomorrow, same for Johan just 10k behind them. I hope Johan joins back with them, we all know that the last kilometers are the most difficult, and it would help mentally to have other riders around. 

A little concern now goes to Tiago, who has separated from Hilda and is now resting in Mullsjö. With 422k left, that leaves very little margin, and he will start today his own race against time. Go on Tiago! We are all (dot)watching and cheering for you! 


Day 10, WTF (Where is The Finish?)

The struggle continues. Since Johannas report of this morning we haven’t seen any more competitors reaching the finish line. Niclas Fagerlund had to scratch with only 200 Km to go, even him with too much pain. Scratching with that short distance, compared to the over all distance, hurts so I can only imagine how bad it must have been trying to pedal his bike. What a ride you’ve done Niclas!

Other wise the weather seems to do what it can to make this ride as difficult as possible for our participants with strong winds, heavy rain and for the season low temperatures. 

By tomorrow evening we’ll hopefully se a bunch of riders arriving at Smygehuk, amongst others the first riders riding in pairs.

It's not over until it's over

Our reports are going to feel more and more exciting as each evening / morning we will probably have new finisher(s) to announce!

Martin reached the finish in third place this morning around 2:45 am. At the time of this report, he is probably enjoying a good night sleep, without having to worry about waking up, packing and riding again (although after a few days back to normal, riders typically miss the simple life on the trail…).
We now have a podium! This was a great race, well fought, and Martin certainly gave a run for their money to Rasmus and Alexander in the first days of the race!

The rest of the field seem to have kept the same order from yesterday, but are all getting closer to the finish line!

Niclas has 220k to go, and the 2 Skoda short pairs are in Hestra with 350k to go. Then we have Oscar & Philip a little outside of Sandhem, Johan still with Amanda & Dennis at CP4 in Skövde. Tiago (and Hilda) are in Töreboda, which means today they will pass through CP4 and we will then have everyone between CP4 and the finish.

It is highly likely that only Niclas will reach the finish today (even probably at night), most of the riders should arrive Thursday, and a couple of them finishing Friday, closer to cutoff. At this point of the race we wish them a eventless ride to the finish! 


Day 9, the podium

At 7:11 pm Alexander reached Smyghuk and ended his race in second place. It’s been a real joy to follow his battle with Rasmus, who reached the finish line early this morning. What a fight they both put on and I’m sure non of us dot watchers can truly understand how deep they have dug to race this course. It’s not only been the sheer distance, the logistics and lack of sleep they’ve had to fight against, but the weather too. With down pours, wind and low temperatures it has done everything in it’s power to make it even harder. Big kudos!

Later on tonight we expect Martin to finish in third position and Niclas has another 24 hours of riding to look forward to before he reaches Smyghuk. GO go go!

Behind them we have another race to keep an eye on. The race against the clock to finish before the cut off time. We’ll get into that more tomorrow.


Alexander Kirkhoff finishes second

We got notification from the race organizer that Rasmus reached the finish line this morning at 3:25 am! Congratulations! Rasmus has shown strength, skills, courage and resolution! At the time of this report, Alexander has 171km to finish, and you can read more in the evening report about his misfortune on the last day of the race, and how his strategical choice might not have paid off the right way… but nonetheless a wonderful race for him as well! On the dot watching side it has been really fun to watch the race to the top be fought until the last moment, it was never 100% clear who was going to emerge as winner… and I’m sure the pressure felt by Alexander has contributed to Rasmus riding faster and maybe resting less than originally planned…

This Epic finish always comes with mixed feeling. Excitement at the wonderful victory, pride at the hard fought battle and the new record! But also a little feeling of sadness to know that this fun adventure is coming to an end, and in a couple days all the dots will have finished their race and disappeared from the map … but they certainly leave us with wonderful memories and dream to make until the next edition of the race! 

On the solo race, Martin has 300k to go, and Niclas has 500k. The field is now well spread out and there will probably not be many changes there, they will arrive one by one to the finish and enjoy some well deserved rest!
The short pairs Amir & Mattias and Marie & Andreas are still together, and they are resting in Töreboda. Being all from the same Team Skoda, it is not impossible that they will ride together until the end, or they might split at some point and we will see a clearer “winner” emerge…They are a little ahead of Oscar & Philip, first long pair.

We then have Johan (#5 in long solo) resting in Karlskoga, the short pair Dennis & Amanda resting a little north of Grythyttan, and the Lanterne Rouge Tiago in Grangärde. The good news is that it looks like Hilda’s dot is close by, which means he might have a riding buddy after all! (see from previous reports, Hilda’s teammate had to retire but she decided to continue the route, albeit unofficially).

Tiago has 800k to go, and we remember some members of Team Skoda wanted to enjoy fully the allotted 12 days, so another good news is that the dot watch adventure is far from over, and we should have fun and entertainment continue until Friday! 😊 


Day 8, a champion has been crowned!

Last night Alexander, riding in second place, made a bold move in order to gain some distance to Rasmus. He skipped the nights sleep and  just took a short nap, 1 hour, and then rode on in the rain and wind that has stuck over southern Sweden since last night. In the wee hours of the mornings he was really cold, wet had to hide from the weather since he could hardly move. He found a sheltered busstop were tried to gain some warmth wrapped in a sleeping pad and emergency blanket, but it didn’t  give enough shelter so he had to get moving and then he found a unlocked covered car trailer where he could hide from the elements waiting for the store to open so he could resupply. I saw a picture of him hiding in the car trailer and it looked even worse the the wood shelter he slept in the other night .. lol.  It was a bold move of him that unfortunately don’t seem to pay off. Late in the morning he had to get a hotell room to get some proper rest, dry upp and try to dry he’s gear.

In the mean time Rasmus has moved on steadily. Right nov he’s got less the 100 K to finish line and if he keeps moving at the current speed he’ll reach there by 2 am. I’m pretty sure he wants to wrap this up now and just get home as quickly as possible. Alexander is now 180 km behind. So by tomorrow morning we’ll likely have a winner of this crazy race the length of Sweden from north to south.

From social media updates you can tell everybody has had a rough day due to the bad weather. Even thou, the spirits are high and nowhere close to the lows of day three and four. 

The gamble that didn't pay off

The leaders of the solo long race are into their final countdown to the finish and we can see they are throwing their last energy into the race. With more than 300km to go, considering difficult trails and accumulated fatigue, it might take them at least one more day to get there, and it will be a challenge for sure!

Rasmus & Alexander continue to compete very well and give us some entertainment. As usual, a lot happened during the night while we were sound asleep. Alexander finally passed Rasmus around midnight, when Rasmus had a very slow section between 23:30 and 00:30. Not very clear what happened there, did he suffer a mechanical? Physical pain? Or it might even have been a short nap, not well captured on the GPS… Either way, Alexander started putting some distance between him and Rasmus but stopped around 1am at Grimsås and slept until 4:30 am, giving Rasmus the perfect opportunity to reclaim his first place!

At the moment of this report, Alexander is now is Hestra (breakfast?) and Rasmus has a 80km lead. But with more than 300k to go, he will probably need to stop for a little while tonight, and we could still see Alexander catching up and potentially passing him… 

Martin is now more than 100km after Alexander, and has himself more than 100km lead on Niclas. Johan is more than 250km behind, enjoying a good night rest at CP3 in Rättvik with Amanda & Dennis from the short pair race. So, the rest of the Solo long race looks pretty much set.

On the Pairs races, we have the 2 short pairs of Andreas & Marie, Amir & Mattias all together in Grangärde, which is also the place that the long pair leaders Philip & Oscar have chosen to spend the night.

Tiago closes the field in Edsbyn, which is where Maya and Hilda decided to stop. We will hope that he can maybe ride and join back with Johan, Amanda & Dennis, otherwise it might start to become a little hard mentally to be the Lanterne Rouge alone on such a grueling trail… We will cheer on and wish all the riders the best for today!
