A refuge as a start location that involved a 1.5 hour hike-a-bike proved that getting to the start line is the hardest part. Three curfewed sectors defined the first two nights and stalled the front runners, creating two overnight armistices. Ricard Calmet lined up with the luxury of being an unknown rider but he soon set the pace. There was much excitement for third place as James Craven and Steven White ascended to the refuge on different routes, only to arrive one minute apart.
